Loss in 50 of cable at 1296 MHz:

LMR-400 2.55 dB
LMR-600 1.6 dB
LDF4-50 1.28 dB (standard 1/2" Heliax)
FSJ4-50 2.88 dB (This is the common 1/2" "superflex" Heliax)
LDF5-50 0.73 dB (standard 7/8 Heliax, now obsolete)

With care you can run the LMR-400 cable from the antenna feed, around
the rotator, right to the radio. With 7/8 Heliax, you need jumpers at
both ends. Add ten feet of higher loss cable plus the loss in the extra
connectors, and that 1.8 dB evaporates. Even if it didn't, 1.8 dB
doesn't justify the pain and agony of dealing with 7/8 line, maybe on
EME, but no way for a newbie tropo station. Start easy, leave room for
growth and adventure!

Hey!

Tonight is the EME contest.

If I wanted to monitor the local side, where would I
listen (6, 2, or 70cm)?

Thanks,
Peter

There is good activity on 2m locally, I heard VE7TIL from CN89 and actually
worked W7IUV (DN07) via moonbounce.
Best way to start is by visiting http://www.chris.org/cgi-bin/jt65emeA where
stations announce CQs and make real time skeds.
Some big guns are copiable by single Yagi stations. You can look for W5UN on
144.130, KB8RQ on 144.127, HB9Q on 144.111 and RN6BN on 144.119. Just aim
your antenna at the Moon.
