If you like to do meteors you need this.  Finally have original pgm running on Win7 but it took a while.  Haven't tried this program as yet.  Sometime today.  Still working on pinched nerve shutting down right leg.

Sabine, DL1DBC and author of the “Virgo” meteor scatter radar page respond to my plea for help in getting this Java based, web application to run last night. He announced that Alexander, DL8AAU, and Bastian, DB1BM, made a redesign of the software and it is now available in a standalone version. It can be downloaded here:

It runs perfectly on my Windows 10 64 bit machine. YMMV. No joy on my MacBook Pro so far.

All you need to do is enter your Maidenhead Grid Square in six-digits, and the software will show you the direction of the radiant for all currently active meteor showers. It also has some great real-time data about rates, etc. Wonderful tool for those chasing meteor scatter DX. Highly recommended! Thanks to Sabine, Alexander, and Bastian for their hard work on this.

Interesting, but I can’ use it, as the window display on the screen is to tiny I can’t read it.  There’s no maximize or ability to change window size, and even it there were there would need to be auto-scaling of the display to make it readable for today’s modern higher-definition laptop and desktop display adapter/monitors.  They should change the Java display code library they’re using to a more functional one.  Otherwise, good idea and looks promising.  It downloaded and runs on my Win10Pro-64b laptop with no problem (already have an updated “real” Java environment).

Without knowing exactly what it's suppose to do, (no Help File), it appears to run on my Vista laptop, accepts my location, and displays data with a very usable sized window. It does not auto-update the clock (requires clicking the location input button), or save my location. It looks like a Java applet, therefore a specific version of Java may be necessary for correct operation.

New observation. The clock updates on the minute although it shows the "seconds" numerals.

I ran Virgo on Windows 10 Pro 64b using latest Java version 8 update 181 (download from java.com).  I also ran it on Ubuntu 14LTE linux with the default JRE installed; since that is a guest VM (VMware 14 Pro) on the same Win10 host machine, Virgo had the exact same display problem on my 4K UHD display (which I’m not willing to downgrade resolution just for this one app).

I also noticed that the user location maidenhead field uses a font that doesn’t scale with the app, so in my case you only see about 1/10th of a single character in that field, although my entry seemed to take (I think, I can’t read it, too small).

The UTC clock is auto-updating hour and minute for me, but not seconds for some reason.  Also, the title bar displays an old version date of “version 2.21 2014-2-14”, which of course doesn’t pertain to functionality (there’s no version number posted on the Virgo bitbucket download page).

Another observation, I am in no way a programmer so have no idea what can be done with this, but:
Right click on the locator input box opens a menu relating to Unicode and IME.

Roger, I’m not in front of my machine at the moment to check Virgo, but what you’re seeing is likely a way to select a character set (compliance with Unicode) that best suits your foreign language (!) and an Input Method Editor (IME) for selecting things like your country’s keyboard or speech recognition (if available), both applicable to that locator entry field (and other things in the app).  If it looks like UK or US English on the screen, and you don’t use a Swedish or Kanji keyboard, you should just ignore those settings.  Unless you’re a Klingon.

Got this running on Win 10 after installing the needed Java version.  Looks neat!  Vista computer will be tested later.

Now if someone can help enlighten and train…:

What is the “KCG”?

Should I check “W_E” or leave it “E-W”?

Everyone’s pink/ purple antenna heading is showing approx.. 70 deg for around here right??  (sanity check)

But again, very neat!!!

Thanks Jim,

Eric N7EPD

How, exactly?

Like Windows, you must install Java first. Open a command line (terminal)
and do this (you may be prompted for your pwd):
sudo apt update
sudo apt install default-jre

Then download the virgo.jar file from bitbucket.org (using the link emailed
to us on the PNWVHFS reflector). If you use your Firefox browser to do that
(Chrome probably also does this), it will wind up by default in the
Downloads directory folder. Best to create a new usr folder to move it to:
sudo mkdir /usr/virgo
cd /home/<your user account name>/Downloads
sudo mv virgo.jar /usr/virgo
cd /usr/virgo
sudo java -jar virgo.jar

If you have the standard GUI version of Ubuntu installed, you should then
see the Virgo GUI window open.

I hope that I got that all accurately (I'm not in front of my machine). If
you don't know your linux user account name, you can simply:
cd /home
ls
(look for a directory folder that has your familiar user name and then you
can 'cd' to that name)

I'm pretty sure the KCG represents the Kappa-Cygnids, minor shower.

My major indicator is pointing 80*.

Ah yes, beam heading for the minor shower in view.  And the Perseids pointer has moved to almost 95 deg now so tracking it.

Wish I didn’t have to enter my grid each time I start the program…

Tnx,

Eric N7EPD
