For the past year, Down East Microwave Inc., utilized a subcontractor to
manufacture our VHF/UHF Transverter product line (50, 144, 222, and 432
MHz). As of January 15th 2018 this subcontractor, Q5 Signal, LLC. managed by
Corey Abercrombie, N4NGZ, has acquire the exclusive rights to manufacture,
sell and repair the existing VHF/UHF Transverter product line and all past
VHF/UHF transverter products.

We believe Q5 Signal's past experience will allow them to continue with a
commitment to quality, customer support, and future development of all
VHF/UHF transverter products.

Down East Microwave Inc. will continue the manufacturing of 900MHz and above
transverters along with its complete line of LNA's, PA's and accessories for
amateur radio use.

For details of the Q5 Signal product line or to purchase or schedule a
repair of any VHF/UHF Transverter product please see the Q5 Signal website

Peter (or is it 'Pete?):

I really wonder why you are asking if "Dave" is "retiring".  Don't think he cares because the company was sold to Steve Kostro back in the 1990's.  I bought my first DEMI transverter kit from Steve in 1996 when they still were in NJ.  I even visited their basement business as part of the 1999 MUD in Philly.

But this is News to me.  I ran a small kit business making DEMI transverters for a few years (which ended last spring).  Part of that was that because DEMI had subcontracted  assembly of their VHF/UHF transverter line (which meant they no longer could sell me kits for resale assembled due an exclusivity clause in their contract with the subcontractor).

Now, I am able to tell "the rest of the story":

DEMI and I discussed my buying the VHF/UHF line a few years ago, but it would have required me to cash out my 401K to buy it; a risk I thought was too much for us just starting retirement.  It was a good investment considering the Down East reputation.  But I also saw it would be a full-time occupation leaving no time for ham radio.  Had this come ten years earlier, I might have been more tempted.

So now Down East Microwave "really" makes microwave gear.  It will be interesting to see how Q5 Signal does.  I'm guessing they will only sell assembled units.  DEMI's move from NJ to FL a few years ago got them seriously backlogged in delivery of assembled units (the reason I had any business making kits).  Wish both companies well.

Mike,

Certainly that is something they will need to establish if wanting to maintain the market,  I note they continue to display the Down East name on the equipment at this point.  I would guess that would only happen with DEMI's blessing.  I believe the year working as subcontractor allowed DEMI to oversee their production quality.

I hope you noted this only applies to the 50-432 MHz transverter line; DEMI continues to make 900-MHz+ equipment.  I have one more transverter to build: 10-GHz for a loaner rig.  I will have to decide whether it will be DEMI or Kuhne Engineering.  One unit will get use for 10-GHz eme (2019).
