For those who might be interested, TE Systems has a website now. I'm not
sure how long it's been up, but a Google search doesn't return a hit to it
yet.

Amateur radio amps can be found at:

Must be pretty new. Their business maybe fell off a little during the
recession, and they finally felt the need to raise their profile. :-)

I see they have a higher-power 6m amp now that runs on 28 VDC with a lower
RF power-in requirement. Would be ideal for somebody running a low-power 6m
transverter like the Elecraft or similar. Don't know what kind of 28 VDC
power supplies are available on the amateur market, though.

Thanks for the heads-up, Clay.

Clay, you planning any 6m grid DXpeditions for this summer? Still needing
CN78... :-)

your still needing that one ! Also DN29, 38 and 48 are easy as well.. I
may run /R in June.. and do All Four..well Five if I finish up in my grid !

If you are looking for a VHF amp, don't forget to check out the new kw amps by M2
for 6m and 2m. They run on 48 VDC, so you can use one of the cheap 3kw switching
power supplies from the sources on EBAY. GL and VY 73, Lance

Bill,
No firm plans yet, but I'm thinking about it. K7CW and I have discussed
doing CN78 this year. I'm pretty sure that one or both of us will spend at
least a day or two up there. That's about a 1250 path for you, so we should
be able to make it by MS even if there isn't any Es while we're there.
Schedule will depend on my work schedule (or lack thereof), but the most
likely time for me to head out this year is either between the June VHF and
the CQ VHF contests, or around August 12-13 for the Perseids meteor shower.

I am kinda leaning towards the power supplies as the good deal...I only
get $25.00 for the 48VDC 40 amp HP switchers.....

These SSPA's are all to expensive, considering the bands of operation
and $/watt cost. Why are they so expensive, Lance?

Is the M2 product built with real linear devices? Has TE Sys change
their design, or still they same product?

Yes, that is what I thought too...I have a few such power supplies over here now.
I got one of the 3KW HP switching power supplies for $12.50 on EBAY (not
including shipping, which cost a little more than buying the power supply!). It
sure seems like these switchers are the way to go. I guess some of the concern is
that some of these commercial switchers like to have at least some load on them
in order to hold regulation. I have not heard of that problem, though, with the
HP3kw power supplies. For my application, it is irrelevant anyway, though, since
I would be using them full duty when they are on WSJT anyway.

I suspect it is just a question of regulation, efforts to make them quiet and the
amount of demand. I have no doubt that the prices will come down on new swiching
power supplies as time goes on. The nicest thing, I think, about switching power
supplies is their ability to provide constant power output over a wide range of AC
input voltages. So, for portable operation in the boonies in some developing
country, there is no problem with the line voltage sagging a large percentage.
The same problem with a tube type amplifier could basically cause it to be just
plain inoperable.

TE Systems has been working for the last several years on new 600w amps for 6m and
2m using 28 VDC devices. These are bascically spin-offs from their military
products. They said that they may be able to double the number of devices to
provide 1100w output on 2m, and maybe would consider doing it on 6m too, but they
sure have been slow to come out with these amateur devices even when they have
them on the top of their "to-do list" so I am not holding my breath for the kw
units. I agree anyway - their choice to use 28 VDC, which apparently requires
only expensive power supplies - makes their amplifiers an expensive choice.

Probably the nicest thing about the compact solid state linear M2 amplifiers is
that they are 1kw continuous output now for 6m, with 2m soon to follow. In
addition, they use 48 VDC, so there are affordable lightweight switching power
supplies available.

I know there also were a number of low band TV transmitters that have been removed
from service, and I had hoped that there would be more of the amplifier modules
from those stations made available on the surplus market for amateur 6m
applications. I know of only a couple such stations that were broken up and made
available for amateur use. Typically, those are 800w solid state amplifiers that
operate on 48 VDC. I don't know if there are still some old units floating around
or if they have all been liquidated already by the TV stations ...it might be
worth an inquirey to your local TV station if they used to transmit on the lower
TV channels before the switch to digital on UHF.

Yeah...

Well, I certainly know the worth of using switchers in the third
world...there is No linear type power supplies that can handle a
fluctuating AC input like a switcher. They are the Only way to go when
portable. Not to mention, the significant weight reduction for fly away
portables....

The SSPA offered at TE and M2 are so darned expensive? You can buy these
power levels with True linear specifications at 1296MHz for cheaper than
the 6 and 2 meter assemblies I see listed by M2 and TE....

Anyway...

Jerry,

DN49 definitely still needed here; all the rest of those you mentioned, I
have confirmed.

Besides DN49, I also need DO40 and DO50 in that same area.

Speaking of the DN field -- getting close to having all 100 of them... 8 to
go. In the PNW area, I still need DN19. Anybody know of any 6m activity in
that grid? Not FFMA 'cuz it's in Canada, but would still like to get all 100
DNs one of these days. Besides DN19 and DN49, all the rest of the DNs I need
are in the south (WY/CO).

I posted this to the VHF reflector a few days ago:

I'll be driving across Canada this summer (and back), going through 50+
grid squares on my way to VY2. Leaving Vancouver on June 2 (via the Trans
Canada Highway, so all the grids will be in Canada), arriving in PEI on
June 10.
Starting around the middle of July, I'll retrace my steps.
I did this before, in '95 and '96, but had no Es from many of the grids.

I'll post a list of the grids closer to my departure date.
Book now to avoid the rush.

Details at 11:00.

VE7XF (and other calls TBA)

I will be back in Moab again wed and thursday, have ic706 in the truck into vertical on camper roof. Evenings mostly. Passed through southern utah grids today but on motorcycle. Maybe the eskip will be friendly this week again.
