that is no fair.  I paid $35 for a real one torn from a magazine on EBAY years ago and it is framed and is the first thing you see in my ham shack. Supply and demand now says K7ND has devalued my ham shack!

Based upon the equipment, he appears to be catching a Cycle 19 six meter F2 opening, tuning an RME VHF-152A, used during the 1950s. Covering 10, 6, and two meters with a 6AK5 front end, it was deaf on 2 and almost impossible to tune in an a.m. station. Exhaling beer fumes toward it would easily have caused a 2 meter signal to disappear.

The bottle of Schlitz is also viewed wistfully, with memories of when it was a premium eastern beer served in "better" establishments.

I believe my first 2m radio had a 6AK5 front end (converted
AN/ARC-1). I was very deaf! I was thrilled with a 35-mile
contact! It transmitted with an 832-A at about 25w to two stacked
8-element HB yagis at 35-feet fed with TV twinlead. My SWR meter was
two No. 45 bulbs connected to a short stub of twinlead taped to the
main line. I had all of $50 in the whole thing which included a
35-foot TV tower.

I would have killed for an RME receiver back then.

That is a great picture! The guy looks like he just got home from a hard day at the office, and hasn't even had time to take his tie off yet. His wife looks like she just got home from her job too, as a stewardess for TWA or Pan Am - still has her earrings and uniform-type dress on.

Thanks for posting this!

I thought the RME converter worked real good on 6 am. Together with my Globe Scout 680-A,  Hallicrafters SX99 rcvr, and a High Gain beam, I worked over 100 JA's, South America, ZL, VK, almost all on am. Didn't work much DX-CW in 1958; the DX stations couldn't or wouldn't send CW slow enough!

John Falter was a renowned pop artist before, during, and after WW II. Here's another of his radio-related pieces, which I like even better (I'm a big fan of WW II poster art in general) --

This 1942 recruiting poster shows a nice bug in use... Looks like a Vibroplex to me, but I'm not certain. I'll bet there is a collector or two on the list who could say for sure!

The level of detail in both these pieces makes me wonder if perhaps Falter was a ham. The Wikipedia article doesn't say, and a quick Google doesn't turn up any definitive information. Anybody got an old callbook? Falter lived until 1982, so it might not have to be all that old...

Turner Classic Movies showed an old (1939) flick a few weeks ago called "Everybody's Hobby" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031284/combined). About a lad who gets him ham license and saves the day when an emergency comes along. I recorded it and will bring it to the next conference. Takes me back....
