Hello Everyone -

There have been some discussions recently about activating some relatively rare FFMA grids.

Today, an updated Leader Board was published on the FFMA Yahoogroups web site. For those who don't already know about it, the FFMA Leader Board lists all stations who have worked 400 or more grids on 50 MHz towards achieving the Fred Fish Memorial Award. More info can be had by visiting and/or joining the FFMA Yahoogroup which is open to all licensed hams. Along with the Leader Board, a map showing the grids most needed by the leaders was published. The 488 FFMA grids are color-coded, making it very easy to spot the rarest grids. It should be useful to those who are contemplating visits to rare grids in the near future. Here is a pdf of the Most Needed Grids map:

In the conversion to pdf process, a few of the grids were stretched out, but the information is all intact. Right now, the most-needed grid in the West is DM02, which is very hard to activate because all land in that grid is a restricted military base. The second most needed grid is CN77! This grid is visited often during contests, and everyone (I think) around the area has it worked, but it is still pretty scarce for stations living outside the area. 42.3 percent of the Leaders still need to work CN77 (not to mention the hoards not having reached Leader Board level).

CN77 is ripe for a visit, but other scarce grids are out there quite nearby. Check out the map.

Paul, thanks for the FFMA Most-Wanted tip. I’m always trying to find the latest rare-grid stats and the information seems to trickle out infrequently.

For those looking for more FFMA information, here’s a link to the Yahoo group: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/FFMA/info

For expedition ideas to the rare CN77 on the Washington coast, see my website www.k7bwh.com/cn77.html. There is a good low take-off angle eastward from parks and the airport near Ocean Shores.

For hilltop ideas in those rare and valuable DN02-03-04 grids in eastern Oregon, see www.k7bwh.com/dn02.html etc. I wish I had time to make my own expedition out there again. Who knows, maybe next summer, I can always hope.

I may be back out in the DN02/3/12 area next June pending the return of my Topo Maps CD’s.

CN77-CN76 is a easy drive from Portland and can be worked from the Beach.
Jennifer and I did that last January and the weather was fabulous ...I worked a few S cal stations in a short opening

DN02 was fun this fall but lots of work...

Thank you Paul and Barry.  I’m not in the hunt for the FFMA award, and I applaud those that are.  What I found interesting in Paul’s email was that DM02 was the most needed grid in the West.  I looked at my grid square map showing grids worked from my former QTH in CN87 and noted that I had worked DM02.  A search of my logs found that I had made a 6m contact with WA6TBO in DM02 during the June VHF contest back in 1995.  I‘m curious if anyone else on the list has also worked DM02.

Hi John,

I also worked WA6TBO. This was back when he was working as a contractor and visited the island often. It was also a time when security wasn't as huge an issue as it is now. I suspect a lot of guys worked WA6TBO on DM02 and never gave a thought to how rare it was going to be.

I found a road southwest of Lemhi, Idaho that is at the confluence of
DN25/DN24/DN34/DN35. It is up fairly high, although it certainly does not have a
negative horizon like the spots that were activated in DN34 and DN24 last summer.

I will try to get down there and activate it for a weekend at the end of June next
summer when Es season is at its peak - very possibly for Field Day weekend. VY 73,
Lance
