Apparently, HRO found some "New Old Stock" radios, and have them on their website for $169.  If you were still wanting one, this is probably a good opportunity to get a new one.  It's under their "Current Promotions" section on the homepage.

YES! These are nice radios that work well to easily add 223.5 and 927.5 MHz. (And that's a good price at HRO: http://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-011492.)

Here's a two band antenna design to consider using with the G29:

I started to model this, but there is missing information.

What units are used for the measurements ? (looks like inches}

Is the boom insulated ? like wood ? square aluminum tube ? round tube ? maybe a
broom handle ?

What is the boom diameter ? (maybe if wood, it doesn't matter ?)

Are the elements through the boom, insulated through the boom or on top of the
boom ?

What are the element diameters ?

What style is the driven element ? are there two driven elements ? What are the
diameter(s) of the driven element(s) ?

Is there an article describing this antenna online ?

mysite.verizon seems to be dead. All my searches for W5TX seem to point there.

I had difficulty importing the wires, so input the data manually (in inches) and once you do that and look at the antenna data as given, you'll see there is no boom data, the wire diameter is specified, and since there is no height specified one must assume "Free Space". Depending on what material you choose to make the antenna elements from, you will need to modified the element loss characteristics. The 222 configuration fell into place nicely. A variety of tests showed that there is only one source on the 222 DE and I'm guessing the type of DE is most likely a split dipole since the 902 is parasitic driven. The 222 is resonant near 222.5mhz and the 902 is resonant near 927mhz. Hope this helps.

Thanks Roger,

Yes it helps a bunch. I did as suggested, entering the data manually, and
realized there was a bunch of data missing. The scale in inches was pretty
obvious, as nothing else makes sense.

I'm thinking a wooden boom makes sense to avoid complexity and expense. Maybe
try some 3/16" aluminum rod for elements.

I use 4NEC2 which looks a lot like the original NEC when it was based on punch
cards. It has a pretty good graphical interface and some really handy features
so you don't have to work too hard at the details. And it's free.

I may have an opportunity to query Etienne directly at Seaside this coming weekend.

I have one, which is tuned to the 927.125 here in Portland tonight.
I made a "cheap Yagi for it, was a fun project. I used 1/2 MDF and #10 copper wire.
Works great!

Manuals are here
http://www.repeater-builder.com/alinco/alinco-index.html

User Manual is scanned (can't search it), however service manual is
published so may be searched. If anyone has skookum OCR capability and
wishes to take on the UM they'd no doubt gain many friends.

UM shows interesting VFO Channel Scope p. 57. One may view activity on
adjacent frequencies.

It appears to have lots of useful tuning step settings & even has four
selectable mic gain settings. Both p.59

There are some amusing typos/spelling variants.

Birdies and such are listed on p.17.

The UM pages match the pagination readout in Foxit PDF reader.

Has anyone stumbled on to whether it may TX at 219 MHz? We're allowed
that in the GWN.

I understand that information on W5TX antennas is no longer available on the web - attached is the article by Bob-W5TX on his other interlaced antennas. I used these as a guideline with the dimensions provided for the two band design noted below.  Bob told me that he designed the antenna for 223.5 and 927.5 MHz.

This is the most expensive email I’ve received on the PNWVHFS reflector. J I just ordered an Alinco DJ-G29 for myself.

The peer pressure was enormous after the Seaside group discussion last weekend during the VHF conference. And my rover buddy WE7X just bought one too, so this is a really easy way to add two more bands for grid-circling and rover contesting in general. Plus, it’s a potential radio for walk-up SOTA operation. Btw, it’s my first and only handy talky, so don’t get your hopes up yet for me using more traditional bands on summits.

ROFL! Yes, same here :). Snagged one with mike, dry-cell adaptor,
power cable, and mike adaptor. Added a fair amount of cost to the
purchase, but doing so also eliminates complexity during operation.
I love 220 MHz! Great band! I have an FM base/mobile rig, I think
my seriously unused FM HT has 220, and, of course, I have several
transverters :).
This will be my first 900 MHz rig. It's been a while since we ran
more than four bands -- mayhap instead of doing SSB /and/ FM on 220/1296
in January, I'll see what we can do just running 220/900/1296 FM.

Another antenna idea for the DJ-G29 is the Diamond SRH-229 whip - http://www.diamondantenna.net/srh229.html. It would be a way to keep things simple and also be able to use it on the HT instead of the factory whip.

I mounted the SRH-229 on top of a paint-pole for January VHF and it was pretty effective at about 20 foot. Had two 20+ mile QSO on 927.5MHz (LoS) and 13 QSO and four grids on 223.5MHz from 1600 foot Bald Peak.

Thanks for the heads-up on the special pricing for the Alinco Handheld radios. I just ordered one, now I won't be dependent on my old Motorola Handie-Talkie to work the few 900-MHz channels that it was capable of without doing some serious reprogramming with a PC.

I sometimes fire up my FT-817 on 6M, 2M and UHF during a VHF contest, since I'm on top of a 1750' hilltop, and work lots of people with just a whip antenna on the back of the radio. Hopefully I can do it on 220 and 900 now, too.

Hmm...I just sold mine a couple of weeks ago.
At this point, there are very few 902 MHz repeaters operating in the
greater Los Angeles area, and I have a Kenwood TH-F6A for 222 MHz.

Hi,

We just ordered that same antenna today. We hope to participate in contacts at many times other than just contests also. Lets hope we together can stir up some interest to use these bands just as some of you have already done and inspired some of us.

I am basically a SSB/CW man so all this is new to me. Weak signal is weak signal though so whatever one can afford or is available is what we have to work with.
