Dear friends,
A quiet but spectacular phenomenon is happening in Bengaluru - the annual migration of butterflies from the Western Ghats to the Eastern Ghats. We are thrilled that this year too they are passing through our Puttenahalli Puttakere, in JP Nagar 7th Phase.

According to lepidopterist Mr Rohit Girotra, 'The migration depends on the intensity and duration of the monsoon. It typically starts in March and is completed by May, pre-monsoon. The reverse migration, Eastern Ghats to the Western Ghats, starts around Sep and closes by Oct (prior to the North East Monsoon).

Four butterfly species participate in this Migration: Common Crow; Double Branded Crow; Blue Tiger; and Dark Blue Tiger. Some Plain Tiger and Stripped Tigers are also present.'

Mr Rohit Girotra also told us how to identify the different species but we are simply too excited to look closely for dots and stripes. We'd much rather just  stand and stare in awe at the sheer numbers of these fragile creations.

We urge you to visit the lake asap and feast your eyes on this  spectacular sight. The lake timings are 6 am to 10 am and 4 pm to 7 pm. For those of you who are unable to do so, take a look at the video shot by Nupur Jain (Brigade Millennium).

We feel incredibly blessed to have been nurturing this lake since 2010. The 15th year of PNLIT is less than a month away. With your support we will be able to continue to enrich the biodiversity at Puttenahalli Puttakere. However, we must admit that it is becoming increasingly difficult with the encroachment in the lake premises growing rapidly. The fully grown Singapore Cherry tree in the photographs was chopped down within the last couple of days to build a new house in the slum!

Best regards
PNLIT team

I will try and make time tomorrow to see this in real life. But equally disheartening to read about the encroachment.
