What brand of cable converter does Time Warner use in Champaign
Urbana (Scientific Atlanta, Zenith)? Can one get cable modem for
internet access?

They use a customized Zenith box. They don't offer cable internet
access. Yet.

It's not so customized, it's just more advanced than most of the rest
of the country, since it is a two-way box. (the box can send signals
back to the head end, in case you want to buy a movie)

As for cable modem Internet, there are a lot of problems, both technical and
political, and I wouldn't hold my breath. But do call and ask
about it to let them know that there is a market.

Does anybody know if they make these boxes with left and right audio
(stereo) output rather than the one audio jack? If so, are they
available from Time-Warner (I can always call and ask, but that takes so
much effort :^).

This new technology that will use the phone lines and give access rates
of over 30 times the latest modem technology sounds far more promising
to me, at least in terms of convenience. Also, it apparently will allow
you to use the phone simultaneously, eliminating the need for a special
line.

PairGain sells a unit that is made to replace the standard telco
demarcation box that sits on the outside of your house that gives
768 kbps to the box, then it takes 64 kbps out for one voice line and
also supplies an ethernet jack that gives up to 704 kbps throughput. I
think this is the winning strategy. It saves the telco money, improves
reliability, and lets them offer a new service without TOO much extra
hardware. <http://www.pairgain.com/epds.htm>
