Dear all,
Thank you for showing interest in Programming and Computing group. The response has been better than what we have expected. Now we can also push NCBS to give some institutional support.
So far over 45 people have shown interest, and what is better approximately 25% are willing to be volunteers. We might end up having 1 experienced programmer for 3 people. This is really cool for hands-on session.
For the ease of communication, I'd request you to join the google-group (
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/pncg). There are other benefits of having a google-group: you can easily opt-out and control the no of emails you want to receive. Let me know if you have any problem with privacy setting of group.
I have made first four members of the group moderators/managers. We can review the moderators every 2-3 months. Once the group gets comfortable with its activity, we can distribute responsibilities.
We are hoping to start the first session at this or next weekend (Friday/Saturday or Sat/Sun). We will float a survey for best timings. The important thing is that we should be able to spend 2-3 hours doing some programming every season else it is not really worth it.
How to get started with Python on Windows/Mac/Linux, useful tools and sites, notes about Python features and what is useful in what situations, and details of upcoming activities will be posted on the group.
Written drafts for first session are almost complete and will be shared on the group. You need not read them before coming to seasons but useful for quick review etc.
The google-group is expected to have moderate to high email traffic (occasional flame wars) which is common to any programming group where a lot of details are posted.
