Dear All,

We will start the "Basics of Programming" sessions from tomorrow, 23rd August 2014. All sessions in this series are hands-on sessions. Please bring your laptop or find someone in the group to share a laptop with.

In tomorrow's session, we will setup a common platform to learn programming on our computers. We will achieve this by using copies of a Linux based Virtual Machine. Please download the following (Read note below):
2) Virtual Machine Image (If you do not have a software to extract 7z archive, you can get it here.)
Credentials for the virtual machine image:
username : user
password : NCBS-TIFR

We will discuss a bit about "why linux?" from a "beginner in programming" point of view.
After setting up the virtual machine, we will learn some basic commands to move around and get things done in Linux. Finally, we will explore some basic concepts in programming and have a glimpse at what happens when a program is executed.

See you tomorrow at 6pm in LH2 (Langra),
Best,
Umesh Mohan

Note: The files are hosted on my lab's server and so the links will only work from within NCBS network (NCBS LAN and WiFi). It wont work from NCBS hotspot.
When you try to download using the above link, you will get a message saying that the connection is untrusted. This is okay as we are using a self signed certificate on our server. Just click "proceed anyway" or "add exception" to proceed with the download.
