Sorry. I can't make it today. I'll try on Friday to have the help session. I am available in my bay tomorrow afternoon if you need some help.

This saturday (2pm onwards) we will have a session on "Reading/parsing and processing data". We'll do some basic string manipulations and also use some standard parsers to load data in standard formats such as csv, xsl, fasta, dat etc. If time permits, we'll also do some `python.numpy`.

Most importantly, since data-reading always boils down to string processing, we'll have some activities centered around reading files, processing strings, and writing to file.

I'll announce the place of activity once I get the room.

PS: Some people were not receiving emails from this group. I have defaulted setting to "abridged emails" for all members. Do change the email-delivery settings if you dont want to receive any email.

Title: Basics of reading/parsing and manipulating data using Python
Place: Synapse, Ground floor, SLC, Western Side, 2:00pm onwards.
Speaker: Dilawar

Note that Synapse does not have good wifi strength. So make sure that you have at-least one of the following (if using windows) working.

1. WinPython http://sourceforge.net/projects/winpython/files/WinPython_2.7/2.7.6.4/
2. Spyder IDE working on windows. Get it from here https://code.google.com/p/pythonxy/wiki/Downloads
3. Standard python installation with IDLE https://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.7.8/python-2.7.8.amd64.msi and a good editor such as notepad++ http://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/v6.6.7.html . or gedit http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/binaries/win32/gedit/2.30/gedit-setup-2.30.1-1.exe

Reminder. We start in 10 minutes in Synapse. This room does not have good wifi
connectivity so please make sure that you have python installed.

Dear all,

Today we did reading of files, processing them and constructing
data-structures. Data files are essentially text and they are so exciting.
The session was oriented towards constructing useful data-structures from
the text. We also discussed a bit about how algorithms can change depending
on data-structures. Today we worked with list and dictionary.

We create a small comma-separated-value (csv) file and read it into python.
Then we created a dictionary which we can query to get the data in column of
given name. Then we plotted it using pylab (or matplotlib).

The code of excercise is here:

https://github.com/PNCG/Python_Tutorial/tree/master/snippets/read_file

Feel free to play with it. One last session before we can replan and redo
the python sessions again will be on regular expressions.
