The PMW documentation states:

11.7.3 Beaming across rests at beam ends

A recent innovation in notation is the continuation of beams over rests when they are at the start or
end of the beam. This is thought to be helpful in indicating rhythmic groupings. PMW handles rests
in the middle of beams automatically, but does not by default draw beams over rests at the ends of
beams.

Here I am concerned about beams across rests. Although it is a standard in modern instrumental notation, it is not quite in place for vocal music. Here beams are often used (along with ties) to indicate which notes are sung on the same syllable. And because a rest always indicates the end of a word, you want to end the beam before the rest. Would it be possible to implement a new pair of directives, e. g. [beamsaccrossrests] and [nobeamsaccrossrests] which would enable to switch PMW behavior? Of course it's not a big deal to type a few extra semicolons. But my practical experience during editing of vocal parts is that this is just the case where I often make mistakes.

Hello Jan,

That should be easy to do, though I would make it a header directive, like the existing Beamendrests, and I think a matching name might just be Beamrests.

I will look at it shortly because I am coming to the end of what I think I can usefully do for MusicXML output at the moment. Another fairly small item I will do before the next release is to allow more than two augmentation dots. I was playing one of Schumann's string quartets last week and there's one bar where a minim has FOUR dots! I wonder if any MusicXML processors can cope with that.

Regards,
Philip
