Dear All,

As promised, please find below my experience and suggestions for PMP preparation and exam

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

PREPARATION

*Do NOT spend too much time memorizing ITTOs. It is not worth the effort.

*Focus more on understanding the concepts and relating them to you real world experience.

*Watch the following video to understand Earned Value Management very well. Exam will have atleast 20 questions on this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WsfuvHegxE
*Dont mug up formulas - again, understand the concepts and relate them to your real world experinece.

*Make sure to understand all the techniques in all Knowledge areas well and focus on their advantages and disadvantages, key differences etc. Ex Fastracking, Crashing, EVM, NPV, Conflict resolution techniques etc

EXAM

*Do not delay taking the exam too much after your classroom training.

*I personally dont think we need any breaks during the exam other than for drinking water and for bio breaks. My advice is not to take any breaks unless it is very necessary.

*4 hours is good enough time to attempt all 200 questions. I finished answering 200 questions in about 3 hours and then took a bio break for about 3-4 mins. While answering these 200 questions, I had marked 27 questions for REVIEW. It took me about 35 mins more to review the marked questions and I was done with the exam in 3 hour 35 mins.

*Do not get struck on one question for too long. Select the best answer according to your gut feel and MARK IT FOR REVIEW and MOVE ON. Reading the question again at later point will help more than re reading the same question in the same moment.

*For questions which are too "wordy" (very long ones), first read the last sentence of the question. In some cases, there might not be a need to read the whole question to answer the same.

Example: (This is not a real question in the exam, this is just an example)

Q) There are two members in your team who do not get along well. Person A says " ..............blah blah", then person B responds ".............blah blah....". The project is behind schedule and there is a high risk of cost overrun .... blah blah..blah...

What is the BEST conflict resolution technique a project manager can use ?

a) Confronting
b) Withdrawing
c) Compromising
d) Forcing

To answer this question, we dont need to read the whole story, by just reading the last sentence we know that the answer is (A)

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Please feel free to email me if you have any specific questions.

Thanks,

Sunil Joshi, PMP

Sunil Dude,

When you have time, write in details of your exam experience. How did you find the questions, are they similar to what you see in regular mock tests, Are they more difficult or comparable to the questions we tried during our trianing etc. But also about how managed your time, or needs for the break etc.

I think that will help a whole lot of aspirtants from the batch. Coz, you are now the pioneer

Regards,
Nagaraj

Hello Balakrishna. Please see answers for each of your
questions. 1. Will they ( pmi ) select me ramdomly for audit?
POST exam fee payment ?
If your application gets selected then Yes!
2. After online exam fee payment, i should go ahead and book
my exam dates without waiting in anticipation for any kindly of audit
from PMI ?
Immediately after payment you will get a screen which will tell you
either your application got selected for audit or otherwise. If it
does get selected you will NOT be allowed to do anything else other
then audit procedure. In this case selecting date/slot.
3. There will not be any audit for me ? right ?
You will get to know the answer for this only after payment.
To sum it up. The actual audit selection happens ONLY after payment is done.
Good luck.

Hello Bala Krishna,

I can understand your situation now.. It will be better if you can call me so i can guide you further on same.
Yaa but don't worry it is just audit not only you and me but few more got same in our group. It is just audit as normal how we do in our office, you need to follow the steps as how they told us to do and it just matter of your chance of giving exam to get extend another 2 to 3 weeks to get a date..

Hi Ravi,

Please see the below answers to your questions -

  • Do you remember questions which appeared from Workshop questions, Rita, Headfirst or others on your exam? - You will not get a single question from workshop or PMP books on your exam. But many of the questions were similar.
  • If yes appro how many of them?
  • How many mock test do you think are necessary? I took around 4 mock tests - Oliver 175 PDF, Oliver 75 Online, PM Study, Head First Online Test
  • What should be average score in them? In Head First Test I scored 82%, Oliver 175 - 79% and Oliver 75 questions - 77%.
  • Any special comment on ITTO's- how to get a grip on them? Do not spend much time on remembering ITTO. As many others mentioned, very less number of questions were on ITTO (in my case 6-8 only). To remember ITTO, read Rita and PMBOK in parallel. For example, Determine Budget Process group is TT as - Cost Aggregation, Expert Judgement, Historical Info, reserve analysis and Funding limit reconciliation. Now if you go through Rita, you will see Determine budget section has 5 paragraphs each mentioning one of these tools and techniques. So what I did is, wrote down which paragraph mentions which TT. So, if you read both these books together you will get to know Rita's book mentions all ITTO's in a better way.

General tips -

1. Spend time on Cost Management - I found 30-35 questions. Most of them are easy  so you can target to score 100%.

2. Spend time on Project Initiation and Closing process group and (Such as ordering of events during closure). I found some tricky question here.

3. I read Rita 3 times and PMBOK 2 times. No other books. Practice questions from Rita were very helpful.

4. A large number of questions were targeted at your understanding on tool and techniques. Have understanding of what each tools an technique does.

5. Questions were lengthy. I managed to finish the 1st pass in 3hr 15 minutes with 40 questions were marked for review. Please take some extra time to answer 1st 30-40 questions and then you will see you are speeding up. again for last 20-30 question you are bound to feel tired (and I was anxious too). So those questions will take more time.

Please let me know in case of any specific question. All the best.

Aritra.

Sure. Unlike Aritra, I did not get many EVM questions. I think I had a ton of ITTO questions. The first 50 questions was toooo hard, I spent more than an hour and was frustrated like hell. Took a break after that and next 150 were ok. I am pretty fast, so I was able to review all 200 questions once more.

People taking the test in chennai, the weather is really stuffy, even when you sit in AC. I had to take a couple of breaks just because of the weather.

I did not get too many long questions, 10 or 15 may be. But I guess that may be luck. Most questions had two answers which were very likely and two which had no relation to the question so I just had to pick one from two.

But I guess I was a bit lucky.

Questions relating to identifying stakeholders and defenition of terms were pretty difficult. I had to read the answer choices again and again to narrow down the answer.

Overall, I think the key was ITTO. If you can relate the question to a process, input, tool or output, you can answer them properly.

Ok, one more thing I remembered while waiting for the train - I don't recall seeing any ethics and professional responsibility questions! No questions on point of total assumption or FPIF, CPIF related calculations. No PERT estimate questions or questions on standard deviation or variance. About 20 questions on Quality and related processes.

Preparation:
PMBOK read once
Rita Mulchy read once
Head First PMP and PM study online exams (totally 2 mock exams)

Never bothered with oliver lehmann questions as i kept reading about ppl who told the questions there are too difficult and the pmp exam doesn't have that many difficult questions.

Exam:
Few questions on ITTO about 10-15 i think.
Quite a few questions on EVM and PERT. close to 20-25
About 5 paragraph type questions.
Very hard questions on initiating and closing project phases.

completed the exam in 3 hrs.

Girish

Hi All,

I passed PMP exam on Monday. I'm writing this today because I'd severe fever all this time, even when I was writing the exam. But yes, good  efforts, good wishes, god's grace and of course, my wife's great support on the day I could get out of the bed and saved the exam fees ;)

Warm regards,
