What is Expectancy theory?
Expectancy theory was proposed by Vroom in 1964. It proposes that a person's behavior occurs because of expectations as to the outcomes of that behavior. People believe that their efforts will lead to effective performance and expect to be rewarded for their accomplishments. Expectancy theory is about the mental processes regarding choice, or choosing. It explains the processes that an individual undergoes to make choices
What is Motivation Theory?
Herzberg's Motivation-Hygiene theory
Hygiene factors like pay, benefits and working conditions prevent dissatisfaction. At the same time motivating factors like challenging work, opportunities to learn and advancement lead to satisfaction.
Taylor
Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856 – 1917) put forward the idea that workers are motivated mainly by pay. Workers do not naturally enjoy work and so need close supervision and control.Therefore managers should break down production into a series of small tasks
What is McGregor's Theory of X and Y?
Theory X managers:
Believe that most people do not like their work, and have little or no ambition, need constant supervision and won't actually perform the duties of their jobs unless closely supervised. The managers act like dictators and impose very rigid controls over their people. They believe people are motivated only by punishment, money or position.
Theory Y managers:
Believe that people are interested in performing their best given the right motivation and proper expectations. These managers provide support to their teams, are concerned about their team members and are good listeners.
Theory Z by William Ouchi
It puts an emphasis on the well being of the employees both at work and outside work .It encourages steady employment and leads to high employee satisfaction.
What is Maslow's Theory of Heirarchy?
Maslow's hierarchy of needs say that people have needs, Unless and until the lower needs are satisfied they won't even begin to think about the higher needs.
Order of hierarchy:
Self actualization
Self esteem
Social needs
Safety and security needs
Basic physical needs
Achievement theory
It is proposed by David McClelland. People are usually motivated by need for 3 things; Achievement, power and affiliation.
