Dear All,
I am very happy to inform you all that I have successfully cleared my PMP exam on 24th Aug 2010.
Though I have not been posting much comments on the forum, I have been silently preparing myself based on the tips & comments provided by many of the experts in this community.
But, I feel that by posting my LL, will definitely benefit our other fellow colleagues who are aspiring to become a PMI certified PM Professional one day J
My PMP experience & Lesson learnt.
ü PMP Exam – Hypes !!
o I have seen some of my friends preparing for PMP very seriously and at times saying that it does seem not to be my cup of tea. I will say, PMP is just like any other school exam that we have given in the past. All it needs is some dedication & concentration and the most vigor & passion to have this exam cleared
o You don’t need to study all the PMP guides and go through all the PMP exam preparation website links that is being suggested by all your friends. Eveyone has their own comfort level and like certain study material design. It is up to you to first analyse during your PMP exam planning stage as how you must take your approach.
o Consider PMP exam itself as a mini project as you have a clear start & finish dates to achieve your goal J Break your study into the same 5 process groups that PMI describes & have a sincere approach towards the milestones that you have set for your self.
ü Input, Output & Tool and Techniques:
o I got few questions which were very Straight forward answers. Being a program manager myself, this was very easy, as it was my mundane experience with all these TTs.
o Definitely create some flash cards or excel tables for your reference, so that you can print them and have it handy for referring whenever you get time. Sincerely follow this approach and you will be surprised that you will have the complete ITTO in your finger tips.
ü Books:
o PMBOK – Reading this book just once or twice is enough.
o Rita Mulcahy – This is what I would call The Book for PMP success. Just read this as much and as many times as possible. I would have read this atleast 3-4 times shortly before the exam. Actually Rita’s approach is very practical and explains terms and scenarios in a layman approach. Also I definitely found that there were many questions, that were very similar to what was given for practice here.
o INFORMATIC material by Alan Paun – Alan has been my guru and I was fortunate to have him met at Singapore J All the tips and tricks he advised during the PMP coaching was really very handy.
ü Sample Tests :
I tried to take all the sample test that were provided by INFORMTICS and also attempted whenever I got time (Both at Work & Home), most of the websites and other sources suggested by friends and in this community.
ü Last 3 days:
I was very relaxed and tried to ready Rita PMP Prep and Informatics materials several times. As I read them, I started to make my own flash card and notes which helped me a lot to memorize things and understand concepts.
ü PMP Exam:
First few questions were easy, then tough ones started to come. I just followed the methodology not to waste time reading ones which I determine are tough. Just marked them and moved on (But definitely answered by giving a 1st attempt)
Then the questions became easier and at the last again there were a few easy but kind of very confusing questions ( Sometimes I felt as all the answers to be correct) – Well this is the trick that PMI follows and one of the reasons why some of them are not able to clear PMP exam.
For my first 75 to 80 are tough and Tricky, 80 TO 160- Moderate. After 160 I felt many questions are again tricky.
I was able to complete by exam in just 2 hrs. For the rest of the remaining 2 hours, first I spent time finding the right answer for the marked onces and then went through the complete 200 questions & reviewed the answers 2 times. While I did this, I realized that I had infact overlooked many questions by not reading the important words like BUT, EXCEPT etc. Having relaxed time to read them again and again will ensure that we read the questions correctly and thereby answer them correctly.
Some of the questions which had formulae’s, I would call it as straight forward as I had memorized all the formulae’s. But a few might find this confusing as there is extra gold plating done by PMI on these questions to divert our attention to else where.
One thing is very clear – Exam only checks the Project Management concepts, and does not need to memorize or vomit any thing that is there in the PMBOK
Also one needs to be very careful that we don’t apply our practical approach but be open mind and answer question in the PMIism way J
Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank my other friends who have always motivated me and also shared their experience and knowledge with me.
I have many more tips and tricks and can advise more offline. If incase anyone needs more help, you can write to me at moha...@gmail.com
Cheers,
