Hi,
I have cleared my PMP exam dated 13th Nov. I would like to take this moment to thank Sudhir Garg, Razia, Iqbal Singh and other members of this forum.
It took 3-4 months for me to prepare(3-4 hours daily and around 6 hours on the weekend days). The below are my LL:
1). Notes I had used:
I have habit of using hand-written notes in my whole life but for PMP this didn't work. I took a print-out of diagrams of ITTOs (Input, Tools & Techniques, Output) for all knowledge area from PMBOK. I noted down some of the keypoints on the back of each sheet such that it would be easy to remember what is where. If you are able to memorize these ITTOs, this will help in boosting your confidence.
2). Books I had used:
I read O'reilly Head First for understanding of the Knowledge areas for once. I read PMBOK and re-read for another 3 times prior to taking my PMP exam. I studied Rita 2 times.
2).Filling your gaps is key to success:
I took formal classes for obtaining 35 contact hours. They provided substantial study material and some mock tests but trust me we can't expect much out of 4 days formal management classes. I would like to rephrase what I had learned from Razia LL that really helped me to sail through exams
"It doesn't matter what your scores are. All you need is to FILL YOUR GAPS. Try to dig in and find out your wrong answers, have clear concepts, go and read the section again in PMBOK or any other material that you are using. Understanding mistakes are the key to success!!."
After I had read PMBOK, Rita Mulcahy and Head First (first pass of reading) my scores in mock test were around 65% and that made me rethink what I am doing. I did another pass of Rita and PMBOK and again gave some mock exams and that showed improvement.
The mock exams by Oliver Lehman - 175 questions should be done after you feel that you are ready for the final test. As the mock exam claims if you score above 75% you are good(I agree on this :) ). There is another aspect that one should not attempt just any mock test that is freely available since sometimes you might get answer that may mislead you. For example(this is one of such question for which I got different answers) ie.
Q: You are project manager and one of your vendor is consistently delivering late. He has asked you to continue to accept these late deliverables in lieu of discounts he is offering in the claims. What type of conflict resolution technique is applied here?
A. Confronting
B. Compromising
C. Smoothing
D. Avoid.
This question is interesting in the way that some mock test have pointed to option C - 'Smoothing' since you are smoothing down the issue. The Rita mock test says it's - Compromising since both parties are giving something. I do agree with explanation given in Rita mock test. You will get similar trivial questions from different mock tests but it's the quality of the mock test that offers the valid answer with correct explanation.
