People -

I am getting started with my preperation for the PMP, and wanted to get my books right; I am planning to write the exams in mid september, and I wanted to be sure if I need to buy the 4th edition of the PMBOK?

Thanks,
Balaji

Dear Balaji,

You don't need to "buy" the PMBOK Guide 4th edition if you are a PMI
member.
You can get a eBook from PMI after you become a PMI member.

You can download the PMBOK 4th edition once you become member of PMI.

Thanks,

Thanks frank.

So from a perspective of the books to use to study, can i use the earlier version of Rita Mulcahy that I already have or is there a later version that i should be buying?

Thanks,
Balaji

Balaji, hi!
My answear is - YES, you csan use 5th edition, but only as a good reference for example for Risks Management, Quality Assuranse or any other knowledge area.
I mean - there is nothing new inPMI BOK 4th ed. in compare with 3rd Ed for example in Earned Value or Risk Management or Activity Diagrams.

Also - you can find 6th edition in internet also.

My suggestion is to stick to 4th edition - it is much much better than find a "magic book" for exam preparation.

Good Luck,
S.

YOUR STUDY MATERIAL LIST

Firstly its important that you get materails that have been tailored
for the new Ed. DO NOT go with older editions. The reason I say this
is cause, 1. the material has changed. 2. Cost Benefit Aspect - the
new books cost $60 - $90; the exam costs $400+; If you clear, great. I
you do not .. you will end up buying the new Ed books either ways on
the second attempt and pay the re-exam fees. Now your total cost is
close to $1000/- Not including the long hours you have spent studying
and the effort by you and your family who support you. So is it worth
it? No one can tell you what to do but yourself .. Decide if saving
$150/- approx is greater than mitigating the risk of spending $1000+
and rework later.

Secondly, select 2 or 3 at the most reading materials. 1 of them is
the PMBOK by default. Some other popular ones are Rita, Head First,
Andrew Crow, Kim Heldman. Don't read all; its not required. Research
from the list and select any 1; now stick ot it. You will be tempted
with the umpteen choices the internet has to offer .. don't get
distracted. With your set material list you are on the right path to
success.

Hope this helps.

All the best.

Fai!

Hi once again!
Sorry for being unclear.
I say - "you can use old materials because lot of things are similar to 4th edition of standard.
Of course it has no sence to buy 5th ed Rita now.

Z.

Balaji,

In order to avoid confusion and especially if you are using Rita Prep book as your main material for PMP preparation, purchase the Rita 6th edition(based on PMBOK-4) immediately without loosing any further time.

I was also in the same dilemma as i was having Rita 5th edition and then was wondering whether it is worth to purchase the new edition or not...

But then i thought that
1) Rita is my main book of preparation, if i prepare with the previous edition, i would always have the feeling that i might be missing something.
2)In Rita 6th edition, they mention / advice us to go thru pmbok-4 material at many places by giving the page numbers of pmbok-4. If I use the previous edition, then i would miss all this
3) If you keep the book in good condition, after taking the pmp exam, you can still sell it and hence the net cost of the book would not be that much for you !

Best regards,
Vikas

Hi!
I agree with Vikash, if Rita is your main preparation material - you need to start to use 6th edition ASAP
