Hello Group

We have come across the following questions:

1) Your manager has decided that all orders will be treated as “projects”
and that project managers will be used to update orders daily,
resolving issues and ensuring that the customer formally accepts the
product within 30 days of completion. Revenue from the individual
orders can vary from U.S. $100 to U.S. $150,000. The project manager
will not be required to perform planning or provide documentation
other than daily status. How would you define this situation?

A. Because each individual order is a ‘temporary endeavor,’ each order
is a project.
B. This is program management since there are multiple projects involved.
C. This is a recurring process.
D. Orders incurring revenue over $100,000 would be considered projects
and would involve project management.

2) Your IT Company is responsible for making software virus programs. You are responsible for managing both the individual product releases and the co-ordination of multiple releases over time. Your role is that of a:

     A. Program Manager
     B. Project Manager
     C. Functional Manager
     D. Operations Manager

3) You are the Chief of a large publishing house and wants to improve project management practices in the company. What is the Best thing to do in order to manage the publication of each issue?

A.  Clearly define the work to be supplied by other companies.
B. Retain the functional organizational structure.
C. Set up a project Office.
D. Identify all the stakeholders for this project.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The answers to the above questions were given as:
    1) C

The explanation given as: Since orders are numerous and of short duration, this situation is a process, not a project.

    2) A.

Explanation given as:

A program is a group of related projects managed in a coordinated way to obtain benefits and control not available from managing them individually. Programs may include elements of related work outside the scope of discrete projects in the program.

    3) B.

Explanation given as:  A project is temporary and unique. This is an example of a business process that is ongoing and repeatable. Such processes are best managed in a functional organization.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Query:

Why in the third question the work of publication of each issue is not being considered as project.

While in the second question the work on individual releases of the virus-software is being considered as individual project?

------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks
Vikas

Dear Vikas,

In the third question, the work of publication of each issue could be
addresses by SOP and is ongoing and repeatable, it is not a project.
However, in the second question both the individual product releases
and the co-ordination of multiple releases is not ongoing and has a
unique outcome.

Best regards,

Frank
