Publication announcement, with sample attached.
新著発表 地獄草紙 詞書

I've prepared complete transcriptions and translations of the Classical Japanese inscriptions in Jigokuzōshi, the Hell Scrolls in the collections of the Nara National Museum and the Tokyo National Museum, including a fragment from the Nara Scroll in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Each inscription is presented in four formats:
  • Exact Transcription (翻刻): A transcription of the primary text exactly as it appears in the original document, including archaic scripts (歴史的仮名遣い, 旧字体, and 異体字). No changes or corrections have been made, and no punctuation marks have been added;
  • Accessible Version (解読文): The grammar and syntax of the primary text have been maintained, but archaic scripts have been replaced by modern equivalents. Phonetic guides (furigana) and punctuation marks have been added to facilitate reading;
  • Modern Japanese Translation (現代日本語訳): A direct translation of the primary text into modern Japanese. Translations have not been embellished to enhance lyricism, however, notes have been added to improve clarity;
  • English Translation (英訳): A direct translation of the primary text into English. Translations have not been embellished to enhance lyricism, however, notes have been added to improve clarity.
With the collaboration of Jemima Rice.
