Contact for Ueda Makoto publication rights?

Dear PMJS colleagues,

 

I am writing because a friend in Vietnam is seeking contact information for the family of literary scholar and critic Ueda Makoto 上田真 (1931–2020). She has translated Ueda Makoto’s Literary and Art Theories in Japan from English into Vietnamese and is hoping to secure copyright permission to publish the translation. The book was published by the University of Michigan Center for Japanese Studies in 1991:

She has followed up via Michigan and Stanford (where Professor Ueda taught) but has not yet been able to reach the family to seek permission. Please email me if you have leads you might be able to share. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Dear colleagues,

 

Many thanks for the swift and very helpful replies received from Matthew Fraleigh, Paul Atkins, Michiko Suzuki, and Leonardo Wolfe. I believe my friend will now have enough information to confirm rights regarding potential publication of the Vietnamese translation. As noted by Paul, the book was first published by Case Western Reserve Press in 1967 before the Michigan edition in 1991.

 

I am also grateful for the ongoing moderation and editorial work that keeps PMJS running!
