Hello all,

I became curious about the etymology of 様 in all its uses recently - this was originally to try and decide for myself which of the two theories of the etymology of そう・さう presented by Bjarke Frellesvig in his history of the language (p. 338) was more likely (ie. whether it is derived from 様 or from 相), but I've become curious about the etymology of 様 itself.

My request is a simple one: does the full, unabridged version of the 日国 say anything more on the etymology than the abridged? It reads as follows:

Particularly, I am curious about the locational senses of さま which were in use prior to its grammaticalisation as a term of respect, and whether all the uses listed in the dictionary entry can be traced to the Old Japanese noun sama, if we are dealing with two different words (which happen to be expressed using the same kanji today), and if we can etymologically decompose either (or both) any further.

I am not really sure how great the differences are in the etymological notes of the full, unabridged version as hosted on JapanKnowledge compared to the typical abridged version that represents that majority of digital distributions (in phone apps, 電子辞書, etc.) I am reluctant to purchase it, as while the service overall is excellent, the existence of a number of free corpora and copies of some of its resources such as the 日本方言大辞典 being available relatively cheaply on the used market make it a rather expensive indulgence for an individual without institutional resources.

Beyond my primary request, I gladly welcome any discussion or further reading!

Thank you and best wishes,
Ash Price.
