Dear PMJS Colleagues
I am pleased to circulatye details of the Fourteenth Noh Training Project UK, which will take place as part of the 2025 Department of Drama, Theatre & Dance Summer School Programme at Royal Holloway, University of London, UK.
Noh Training Project is dedicated to providing accessible practical training in classical Japanese Noh drama. Our primary focus is an annual intensive summer workshop open to performers, teachers, students, musicians – anyone with a desire to learn more about
this unique example of Total Theatre. We founded Noh Training Project UK in 2011 to give people in Europe the opportunity to access Noh’s rich traditions and unique training practices, to achieve broadly the same exposure as an amateur studying in Japan for
one year, but as an intensive block of tuition across two weeks.
We are delighted to announce that, with support of the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, the estemeed professional noh actor of the Kita School, Akira Matsui, will lead masterclasses in the second week of the Project.
Tuition will cover all aspects of practical noh performance: dance, chant, music, performance analysis and discussion, and the use of mask.
Japanese language, and previous experience of noh or musical instruments, is not necessary.
Dates are as follows:
Taster Weekend: 30-31 August 2025
7-Day Workshop: 30 August - 5 September 2025
Full Project: 30 August - 12 September 2025

With best wishes
