On the behalf of the Department of Japanese Studies at the National University of Singapore, I have been asked to direct your attention to the upcoming application round for graduate programs. Please feel free to distribute this call for applications widely.
The Department of Japanese Studies is one of the largest Japanese studies departments in the Asia-Pacific region and offers MA (Research) and PhD degrees in Japanese Studies.
Our current faculty specialize in Japanese history, performance, anthropology, literature, popular culture, gender studies, media studies, film, art history, political science, and religion. NUS is one of the leading educational and research institutions of
Asia and the Department of Japanese Studies offers a rigorous curriculum, intensive supervision, and a thriving research community.
The main language of instruction is English and the Department Japanese is fully embedded in the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences with close relationships with numerous other departments and programs at both NUS and abroad in Japan through institutional partnerships—providing
an ideal environment for advanced study.
Applicants must possess a strong command of English (TOEFL: minimum score of 85 or IELTSS: minimum score of 6.0) and Japanese language proficiency necessary to do coursework and carry out research.
The Department of Japanese Studies also offers graduate students highly competitive funding packages. In addition, there are many opportunities for our graduate students to apply receive external funding including from the Japan Foundation and the Sumitomo
Foundation to do field work and conduct research in Japan.
The deadline for the first round of applications for semester one of the academic year 2026/2027 is 4 November 2025.
