Dear all,

On behalf of the North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources (NCC), I share the following announcement regarding the new NIJL-NCC/CDDP Digitization Grant Program to support the digitization of premodern Japanese library materials held by North American institutions. Please note that those wishing to participate in the pre-screening review should complete that process by July 1, 2024 per the guidelines on the website.

Dear Colleagues,

The National Institute of Japanese Literature (NIJL) and NCC’s Comprehensive Digitization and Discoverability Program (CDDP) Task Force are pleased to introduce a pilot grant program in support of digitization projects of premodern Japanese research materials held by North American institutions. The grants can be used in various ways, but they are intended to support short-term digitization projects of limited scale. This is the first part of the three-year program that we are planning to offer. Please refer to the 2024-2025 NIJL-NCC/CDDP Digitization Grant Program guidelines on the CDDP webpage for details of the program and the instructions for submitting your applications.

NIJL has long made efforts to bring together holdings information of numerous domestic and overseas institutions as well as image files regarding Japanese books up to the end of the Edo period (1603-1867) through its Union Catalogue Database of Japanese Texts (国書データベース). As of April 22, 2024, the database holds over 920,000 bibliographic records, of which 300,000+ contain image files (a list of the institutions and individuals that have contributed image files in the database is available here). The image files to be created through the NIJL-NCC/CDDP Digitization Grant Program will be made available in this database, so that any users on the internet can easily discover, access, and compare images of rare Japanese holdings of different institutions.

The NIJL-NCC/CDDP Digitization Grant Screening Task Force strongly recommends that anyone seriously considering applying should submit optional pre-screening applications (by July 1, 2024) before submitting the final applications (by September 1, 2024). The Screening Task Force is also planning a Q&A session on Zoom sometime in the second half of July. So, please stay tuned for an announcement.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Toshie Marra (tma...@berkeley.edu).

Thank you very much for your attention.

Best regards,

NCC CDDP Task Force
