Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to share the very happy news that Mr. Tadashi Yanai, the chair, president and CEO of Japan-based Fast Retailing and founder of Uniqlo, has generously donated $25 million to endow the Tadashi Yanai Initiative for Globalizing Japanese Humanities in UCLA's Department of Asian Languages and Cultures. A previous gift of $2.5 million created the Yanai Initiative in 2014 as a collaboration between UCLA and Waseda University. This new gift assures the Yanai Initiative's long-term continuation, and will allow it to expand in ways that will be of enormous benefit to the ever more globally connected field of Japanese Humanities.
You can read more about Mr. Yanai's extraordinary gift at the UCLA Newsroom, which has, for the first time, also posted an announcement in Japanese.
Sincerely yours,
Michael Emmerich
