Dear friends and colleagues (with apologies for cross-posting):
As you may know, Edward G. Seidensticker was a native of Colorado,
born in Castle Rock. He earned a B.A. in Political Science from CU in 1942.
When the U.S. Navy’s Japanese Language School moved to Boulder from
the west coast the year of his graduation, he volunteered with the
Marines and studied Japanese in Boulder from 1942-43, later being
sent with the occupation forces to Japan as a translator.
After a distinguished career, which needs no recap here, he accepted
an honorary degree from the University of Colorado in 2001 and agreed
to donate his extensive personal archives and papers to the
University Libraries. Most of these papers, includiing voluminous diaries,
have arrived and are available through the University Archives for the
use of students and researchers of Japanese literature and the history
of post-war Japanese studies.
In addition, the University of Colorado Foundation has been accepting gifts toward
an endowed fellowship for graduate students in Japanese studies, which is to be
named in honor of EGS, mentor, teacher, and friend to many on these lists. We
are very close (within $4000) to achieving the endowment goal and invite
contributions of any amount in honor of Ed. (You can go to
cas.colorado.edu and click on the Make a Gift Online button in the lower
left-hand corner if you would like to contribute online.)
I look forward to seeing some of you in the Archives.
