Dear Colleagues,

The National Institute of Japanese Literature (NIJL) is pleased
to announce the Sixth Session of our "Materials Workshops" series,
the final session planned for the the current (Japanese) academic year.

NOTE: This time the workshop will focus on waka poetry manuals
(particularly in regard to the correction of waka), and will be held
online on September 9th, from 9am-11am Japan time.

This series of workshops is designed to orient and instruct
interested participants in the use, handling, and research
application of primary-source documents. We particularly welcome
the participation of graduate students and early career researchers.

Here follow (A) information about the upcoming 9/9 session,
and (B) a brief overview of the workshop series and its goals.

[A] “Materials Workshop”: Session VI

TOPIC: Waka Poetry Manuals (歌書)
LECTURER: Kansaku Ken'ichi (Professor, Deputy Director-General, NIJL)
DATE: 9/9 (Thursday)
TIME: Tokyo 9am-11am
VENUE: All sessions conducted on ZOOM, live and unrecorded

Description:
「和歌の添削と批評」
 この25年で劇的に進展した近世和歌研究の現状を振り返り、当代の「雅俗」を踏まえながら、
 和歌史研究の方法や近世和歌史の特質(「堂上から地下へ」「地下から地方へ」)、歌書刊本の
 変遷等に目配りした上で、具体的には上方地下歌人による添削資料を読み解きます。

[B] About the “Materials Workshop” Series

OVERVIEW
Each 2-hour workshop focuses on a different category
of document (hanpon, manuscripts, emaki, commentary texts, etc.),
to be discussed by a field expert in its research use.

First Half: ORIENTATION (1 hour)
The first hour involves a presentation by the lecturer,
combining general explanation of the *type* of document
with concrete illustration through specific *examples*.

Second Half: Q&A SESSION (1 hour)
The second hour involves an open Q&A session where
participants can make inquiries general and specific
about the documents discussed during the first hour.

REQUIREMENTS
No expertise or preparation is expected or necessary,
though the session is (1) in Japanese, and (2) restricted
to those pursuing or planning to pursue a career connected
to research in the humanities.
