Dear PMJS Community,

as every year, I would like to direct your attention to the upcoming application round for Kyushu University's International MA Program and Doctorate in Japanese Humanities (IMAP / IDOC, 広人文学コース).

Our current faculty of five offers specializations in Japanese history, literature, religion, and art and architectural history. Our focus is on Japan before the Meiji period, but we also consider thesis proposals in the modern or contemporary era as long as there is a demonstrable connection to the premodern tradition.

All classes are taught in English. The program is run by a department of the same name (広人文学講座) that is fully embedded to the School of Humanities (人文科学府) and has excellent working relationships with our Japanese colleagues.

Applicants have to possess Japanese proficiency (equivalent to JLPT N3 for MA, N2 for PhD. However, we do not ask for a formal JLPT score).

We offer a rigorous curriculum, intensive supervision (currently we have a ratio of 5 professors to 22 students), and a thriving community. We conduct frequent day excursions in the Kyushu region and a mandatory fieldwork week for MA first years with destinations in all of Japan.

Also applications for shorter sojourns at our program as a research student (研究生) are possible.

Applications for entry in Spring of 2026 are being accepted during the time window of September 1 to 16, 2025.
