Project Launch プロジェクト公開： A World of Edo Art 江戸絵画の世界

Dear colleagues,
Japan Past & Present is pleased to announce the launch of A World of Edo Art. This web portal, spearheaded by acclaimed translator and director of the documentary film Edo Avant Garde Linda Hoaglund, brings together over two hundred captivating Edo-period (1603–1868) artworks related to animals and nature from museums around the world. Designed to entice visitors of any age, this project highlights twenty-four artworks across six subject areas: Creatures of the Land, Sea, and Sky, as well as Plants, the Environment, and Artistic Techniques. Viewers can explore each featured artwork and learn about the artist who created it through high-resolution images, a video with expert commentary, a biography of the artist, and activities and readings that bring the artwork to life by linking it to the natural world around us. A filterable collection of two hundred additional artworks allows viewers to dive deeper into the world of early modern Japanese painting, history, and culture.
The organizers of A World of Edo Art express their gratitude to NHK, the U.S.-Japan Foundation, and the Japan Foundation for making Edo Avant Garde, which served as the inspiration for A World of Edo Art, possible. They also deeply appreciate the time and efforts of the collaborators and experts who helped bring this project to fruition.

ジャパン・パスト＆プレゼント（JPP）は、このたびウェブポータル「江戸絵画の世界」を公開いたしました。本サイトは、ドキュメンタリー映画『江戸アバンギャルド』（Edo Avant Garde）の監督であるリンダ・ホーグランド氏を中心に企画されたもので、世界各地の美術館に所蔵されている、動物や自然を題材とする江戸時代の魅力的な作品200点以上を紹介しています。
年齢を問わず楽しめるように構想された「江戸絵画の世界」では、「空の生き物」「水の生き物」「陸の生き物」「植物」「自然」「絵画技法」という６つのテーマにまたがる24点の作品に焦点を当てています。各作品およびその作者について、誰もが楽しく理解を深められるよう、高解像度画像、専門家による解説動画、画家の紹介、さらに作品を現実の自然世界と結びつけるアクティビティやエッセイを提供しています。加えて、200点以上の絵画作品をフィルター検索できるコレクションを通して、近世日本絵画の世界やその歴史・文化を、より深く探究することが可能です。
