Call for Presenters: Symposium on Humanistic Approaches to the Study of Premodern Japanese Law

Dear Colleagues,
Japan Past & Present (JPP) is pleased to invite paper proposals for a symposium on the theme “Humanistic Approaches to the Study of Premodern Japanese Law,” to be hosted bilingually in Japanese and English at UCLA on Sept 26-27, 2025.
The study of premodern Japanese law often begins with law codes and legal documents, their form and function. In recent decades, scholars have also begun to think about the social life of the law—the ways in which law reverberates through social structures and practices, and how it is lived in ways that inevitably exceed or diverge from its text. This socio-cultural turn, in turn, has inspired studies of law’s place in culture. Recent research has begun to explore how law is performed in courts and in drama, used metaphorically in literature, woven into religion, and implicated in expressions, performances, and expectations of gender.
We invite proposals for papers that address the complex intersections and fluid boundaries between law, culture, and the humanities in premodern Japan (focusing primarily pre-1600).
The Yanai Initiative will cover the cost of travel and accommodations for accepted speakers. The symposium will include time for discussion of Law Codes in Japanese History, a forthcoming project of JPP’s Premodern Japan Collaborative.

The languages of the symposium will be English and Japanese, and presentations will be primarily in-person with limited access for remote participation. Proposals will be reviewed, and notifications sent out, by the end of July. 発表者募集：前近代日本と法──人文科学からのアプローチ
このたび、ジャパン・パスト & プレゼント (JPP)は、2025年9月26日から27日にかけて、『前近代日本と法──人文科学からのアプローチ』と題したバイリンガル（英語/日本語）シンポジウムをUCLAで開催する運びとなりました。つきましては、このテーマに関する研究発表を募集いたします。
前近代日本における法の研究は従来、法律や法文書の形式や役割を中心に行われて来ました。しかし近年では、法社会史、つまり社会における法秩序形成や習慣、そして、法を利用する人々の、局面に応じての法の読み替え、矛盾との直面、また生活の中での機能を考察する研究が進められています。また「生きた法」としての動態的な姿を考察する研究が進められています。
この社会文化的な研究への方向転換をきっかけに、生活文化におけるの重要性にも注目が集まるようになりました。近年では、法がどのように法廷で披露され、演劇で演じられてきたか、宗教や文学にどう関わってきたか、そして、ジェンダーにまつわる表現や行為にどう組み込まれてきたかといったことへの興味も高まっております。
本シンポジウムでは、前近代日本（主に1600年以前）の法と生活文化、そして法の人文科学的研究の多様な可能性について、研究発表を募集します。これらの問題に、さまざまな観点から切り込む研究発表を募集いたします。
採用された発表者につきましては、柳井イニシアティブがシンポジウム参加費用（旅費・宿泊費）を負担いたします。シンポジウムでは、JPPの前近代共同研究企画のプロジェクト『日本の法律史』を議論する時間も設ける予定です。
