CALL FOR PAPERS for MLA ‘24 panel, “The Ceremonial Occasion (in pre-1900 Japan)”
Please consider submitting a proposal by March 3 2023; a 2-3 sentence abstract and proposal of up to 350 words.  Address:  Edward...@yale.edu

*********

Abstract: Papers explore texts created in, for, and commemorative of auspicious and inauspicious ceremonies and interrogate the relationship between sacred ritual, liturgical acts or life events ranging from celebration to catastrophe, and their affects and articulations.

Scholars in all relevant fields and at all stages of their careers are invited to submit proposals to be considered for inclusion in a panel to be sponsored by the Pre-1900 Japanese Literature LLC at the 2024 Modern Language Association meeting in Philadelphia (January 4-7).  The Presidential theme is  “Celebration: Joy and Sorrow.” Papers for this panel might treat texts of poetry, prose, performance librettos and others from any period prior to and including the early Meiji era.  Papers that situate the study of these “ceremonial” texts in broader frameworks, whether theoretically, comparatively, or otherwise are especially welcome.

If your proposed paper is selected for inclusion, you must join the MLA (if not already a member) in order for the panel proposal to be fully accepted. (In rare cases, waivers are granted.) This panel is a “guaranteed session” so if your paper is selected, it will definitely be part of a panel that will take place in Philadelphia in January 2024. In recent years, the MLA meeting has offered both virtual and in-person formats, and panel participants have had the option to chose one or the other format.  The organizer’s strong preference is to have the panel take place in person.

Please direct proposals and/or queries to:  Edward...@yale.edu (Pre-1900 Japanese Literature LLC Executive Committee Member) no later than March 3, 3023.

This CFP has been posted in the MLA’s official online “Call For Papers.”
