Hello all,

I hope you are doing well.

A student asked me about scholarship on the Buddhist response to Kokugaku in the Edo period. I found a little bit here and there, but it's a little outside my expertise. Can anyone recommend something?

Thanks,

Dan

Dear Dan,

For some context, could you please provide some information on what you have looked at thus far? It would be helpful to understand what you've found lacking and are more specifically seeking resources on.

Best,

Paula

Hi Dan,

I'd just note that the fundamental assumption here about the opposition between Buddhism and Kokuaku is worth revisiting (Keichu of kokuaku fame was of course a Buddhist monk himself). Not to mention the lack of a unified kokugaku ideology (Susan Burns, Mark McNalley among others).

On Buddhism and kokugaku, I'd suggest taking a look at work by Emi Foulk Bushelle and Regan Murphy for starters, in English, and then combing their bibliographies.
