In relation to the recent passing of Professor X. Jie Yang, we wish to note that his final book has just been published. (Japanese follows English)

Title: Tawamureru Edo no moji-e, Author: Yang Xiao Jie; Itasaka Noriko (Gen. Ed.), published by Maar-sha on November 24, 2022. X. Jie Yang passed away on October 13, so this is his final monograph. In this book, Professor Yang reproduces the kokkeibon by Jippensha Ikku, Monji no chie (Illustrated Wisdom of Letters), in modern Japanese translation, and discusses each illustration and its text from his own perspective. This book is aimed at providing readers with a delightful experience, even if they lack expertise in Edo culture. Therefore, even the modern Japanese translation is done using contemporary kana orthography, making it easy for anyone to read. We hope that readers can enjoy the experience of "etoki" ("gaining narrative understanding through pictures") through this book.
