Dear colleagues,

The Linguistic Society of America (LSA) East Asian Historical Linguistics special interest group is preparing an organized session proposal for the upcoming LSA 2027 Annual Meeting in San Francisco from January 6-9, 2027 with the tentative title of "Historical East Asian Linguistics and Language Pedagogy." While any topic on language change in East Asian languages is welcome, we encourage proposals on how historical linguistic studies can help teaching premodern or modern languages of East Asia. If you are interested in presenting, please send me (Johnny Bundschuh, jbun...@swarthmore.edu) an email directly with your name, affiliation, and 150(ish)-word abstract by Tuesday, June 2, 2026. Submissions from junior scholars and those working on lesser studied linguistic varieties in the region are encouraged, so if you know of any scholars working on premodern East Asian languages beyond Japan and would not mind sharing this call for papers with them, we would be grateful.

Best,
Johnny Bundschuh, Kyoko Sano, & Tiaoyuan Mao
Co-chairs of the LSA East Asian Historical Linguistics Special Interest Group
