The Fusion of Ikebana and Kyōka: The World of A Selection of Haikaika Poems of the Thirty-Six Flowers: With Illustrations from the Enshū School of Ikebana
In the latter half of the Edo period, as a range of cultural pursuits became integrated into daily life, publications that merged multiple genres in a single book began to appear with greater frequency. Different cultural pursuits were not merely combined or juxtaposed ; rather, they approached a state of true fusion. This talk will examine the Edo cultural phenomeon of “fusion” (yūgō) through the case of the Haikaika sanjūrokkasen (A Selection of Haikaika Poems of the Thirty-Six Flowers, Tenpō 7 [1836]).
The keynote will be delivered in Japanese with English summary. The remainder of the talks will be delivered in English.
