Dear colleagues,

I’m delighted to announce the next talk in our CIEE Kyoto Seminar Series, on FridayJanuary 23 by Professor Ellen Van Goethem (Kyushu University):

Nineteenth-Century Images of the Past: The Creation of Heian Jingū and the Festival of the Ages

Abstract:
In 1895, Heian Jingū was festively inaugurated as a testimony to Kyoto’s bygone days as the nation’s capital. A few months later, a new festival, Jidai Matsuri or the Festival of the Ages, was created with a similar purpose in mind. A close look at the founding stories of both the shrine and the festival reveals a complex narrative that shows how competing interests and views of the past influenced its representation in tangible and intangible form in the late nineteenth century.
Please note this talk begins at 18:00 and will run in a hybrid format from CIEE Kyoto (6th Floor, Gion Classroom) with Zoom access available.
