VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF JAPANESE HISTORY

The Department of History at Trinity College in Hartford, CT seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor of Japanese history for the 2026-2027 academic year.  This is a full-time teaching position and the candidate will teach five courses, two in the fall and three in the spring.

The field is open, provided the candidate can teach the two fall courses that are already scheduled.  These are an introductory survey of pre-Meiji Japan for 35 students, on Monday and Wednesday mornings, and a 300-level seminar called ‘Disaster Archipelago’ (on the impact of natural disasters in Japanese history) for 15 History majors, on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.  Although these times and titles are fixed, candidates can design their own syllabi within the broad course descriptions.  In the spring, the candidate would be able to teach three courses of their own design, in consultation with the Chair.

We seek a PhD or an advanced ABD in Japanese history or a closely-related field.  We will consider applicants who have not been instructors of record but who can demonstrate relevant classroom experience and enthusiasm for teaching undergraduates.

Trinity College is a highly-selective liberal arts college in a capital city.  The Department of History has twelve faculty members who value both teaching and scholarship, and a community of enthusiastic and curious History majors.  Although this is a teaching position, we offer a personal research fund, conference travel support, and support to bring visiting speakers to campus.

Interested candidates should send their cover letter, including a brief explanation of their teaching experience, a CV, and the names of two referees to Lidija Petrus: Lidija...@trincoll.edu.  We will begin reviewing applications on May 4 and the position is open until filled. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States; we cannot sponsor H1B visas, but might be able to extend existing J visas.

Questions may be sent to the Chair, Professor Jennifer Regan-Lefebvre (jreg...@trincoll.edu).
