My own experience with publishers' editors has been almost uniformly bad, and I am scornful of so-called "peer review". I have written or contributed to many books, encyclopedias and journals, and I nearly always end up arguing furiously with editors who know far less than me about the subject, and have little sense of the English language. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose (because of course the editor has the final say). My most recent and largest book was published by Brill, through their subsidiary Hotei, rather than in the admirable series edited by Joshua Mostow; and Brill gave me and my son (the designer) complete control over both text and lay-out. We incorporated a number of very useful suggestions made by Inge Klompmakers at Brill, and I enjoyed a pleasant working relationship with her; but the final result is what we ourselves submitted to the printer. I am delighted with the result.
