Hi Everyone,

I am delighted to announce the launch of a new and improved Online Glossary of Japanese Historical Terms. Thanks for this new site are due to the project team at the University of Tokyo's Historiographical Institute led by Horikawa Yasufumi. Special project funding from the Historiographical Institute and University of Tokyo made it possible not only to add terms from newly published works to the database, but also to build a whole new interface with additional functions that make the glossary even more useful.

Online Glossary of Japanese Historical Terms (日本史用語翻訳グロッサリー・データベース)

Notable Changes:
  • Filtering by time period, author, source, year of publication, and language (English, French, and German)
  • More direct access to the search page (no more checking boxes before searching)
  • Related terms appear at the top of the search results page
  • All pages are available in English and Japanese
This project has been in development since 2021, when the original glossary went offline due to a web upgrade. Thank you to all who spoke up about the value of this resource at that time, and to those who have shared feedback and tested the site before launch. We know that many have been making do with ad hoc solutions since then, and we are grateful for your patience.

Please feel free to send me feedback to pass on to the team! We would particularly love to know if you are using the glossary in your research - please see the "Research Results" page for examples and use this contact form to submit any new publications that draw on the glossary in significant ways.

The team also welcomes submissions of new material to the glossary - please see the "Support Us" page for a link to the form. Sample spreadsheets and a manual will also be made available soon.

Happy translating!
