The book presents the flourishing of waka in the tenth century as the collective achievement of a large cast of agents in different roles and capacities (poets, patrons, recipients and lovers of poetry), and brings to light the variety of social, political, and cultural factors behind waka's rise. The final chapter situates waka within the broader literary landscape of the tenth century, and clarifies its relationship with genres such as Sinitic belles-lettres, Buddhist writing, and prose fiction.
