Ihave the chance to pick up a McKee round baler, very inexpensively. A neighbor used it up until a couple years ago, and it has been maintained and has new belts. It is a "soft core" baler, so he says it makes about 800 lb bales approx 4.5' x 6'. With horses, I have the need for grass hay, so it may be an inexpensive way to get into it.
What model number? I don't have one but a neighbour has one not sure of the model, seems fine. Do a google search by model and it will most likely unearth some information about them. I think McKee built some for other manufacturers too. If it is cheap, has been inside and your neighbour was successful with it, buy it or at least rent it for a day. If you don't have much to do you will likely get by. I have found that round baling is quite experience driven, so don't expect perfection on the first day and try to get your neighbour to help you get going. Type of hay, windrow size, RPM's and moisture all have a factor in producing a good bale. You will bale for a while before you consistently can produce a good bale in all areas with all types of hay. Stuff like wrapping hay on a roller, cone bales, loose bales, etc. are usually as much about the operator as the baler. I use a JD430 and now can produce a perfect bale pretty much all the time regardless of moisture or hay type and yield. The first day not so much.
HI dad had a mckee he bought used in 1986 for 1200 it was an 81 model we used it until 91 to make 800 to 1000 bales a year. it was an easy baler to run but had bearing issues most bearings could be bought from a massey dealer metric sizes used on some combines. when a roller or bearing housing broke we would retrofit one from an early 3650 baler which was built off the same patent but by a differant company.
I brought the baler home last night. I cannot find a model number or serial number plate on the machine anywhere. All it says on it is "McKee Round Baler." It does also say on the side on a small decal "Welger System, Patented."
hi the very early ih 3650 balers are almost the same. mckee sold to vicon which sold to inland which was owned by buhler versatile which just sold to a russian company. dad traded his mckee for a new vicon baler in 1991 we used it for about 7000 bales but they are a flimsy baler so my brother and i bought an 8480 case ih baler a 91 model and haven't used the vicon since 1999 still in the shed. all the parts for the mckee are hard to find but you can make them out of case parts. if you have any problems pm me and i will help you out.dale
