Was wondering if anyone could help.. have a few questions regarding the Apple Watch. Specifically the Ultra. I have apple everything, but never had the Apple Watch. Have always been a Garmin guy, until this weekend. Is there any applications where you can save offline maps without paying for a subscription? I don't mind a one time fee. Garmin has the Garmin Explore application where you can upload waypoints from the computer or application on your phone and it will sync to all your devices. Including watches. Works wonderfully for backpacking and my oversea's adventures. Does apple have anything similar? Can the Apple Watch have a "track to" feature for coordinates? Would like to type in some MGRS coordinates and navigate to them.
Today the best solution for saving offline maps to your Apple Watch for use without a signal is an app called WorkOutDoors. It currently goes for $5.99 in the App Store as a one-time purchase. You can read more about everything the app does here before buying.
Whether you have a brand-new Apple Watch Ultra or the original or new SE, these solutions work for offline maps thanks to the built-in GPS in all models since the Series 2. Have your own experience with offline maps for Apple Watch or even iPhone and iPad? Let us know in the comments.
The big Achilles heel of the Apple Watch Ultra is the total lack of bundled navigation software for offline use. Unlike most Garmin watches, which offer navigation built into the watch operating system, Apple does not. The "Maps" app has walking directions but requires a data connection. The included "Workout" app has no maps or navigation. I guess Apple considers offline maps and navigation as premium features.
However, if you want the best outdoor watch, you'd probably be better off going with the Garmin Epix. It has a bright AMOLED screen similar to the Ultra but has hiking maps and all the navigation functions built into it. The battery will last you days instead of a couple of days.
Just be sure to send the route to your watch before you lose service or disconnect from your iPhone, and Footpath will keep the route loaded on your watch. When you send the route to your watch, Footpath will automatically download all of the topographic maps it needs.
Apple Maps is catching up with Google Maps on iOS 17 by finally letting iPhone users download maps for offline use. iOS 17 will be released to the public later this year for the iPhone XS and newer, and is currently available in beta for developers.
Sadly, using the Maps app, you still cannot save an offline map directly on your Apple Watch. Instead, use your iPhone to download the map via the Maps app, and then Apple shares those offline maps between your iPhone and watch.
Navigating unfamiliar areas or conserving mobile data is made simpler with the offline maps feature now available in iOS 17. This feature lets users download maps of specific regions to their devices, allowing them to access detailed geographical information anytime without needing an internet connection.
The utility of offline maps extends beyond just saving on data costs, it's a critical tool in areas with unstable or non-existent network coverage, ensuring that users can always find their way. Moreover, it enables smoother travel experiences in foreign countries where roaming charges can be exorbitantly high.
Various options in the menu include choosing to download on Wi-Fi-Only or Wi-Fi and Cellular, having the offline maps automatically updated, optimizing storage, and an option only to use offline maps for navigation.
My problem with "offline" anything and that includes music streaming and maps (google/apple) is that the iPhone does not intelligently detect when it is offline.
In the UK the problem I encounter is; I am driving and my phone says it IS connected to the network, and displays (for example) 1bar of signal and the 3G/4G logo. But it IS NOT actually working.
Rather than the apps switching into offline mode - the apps just stall and continually try and download data.
To get the offline mode to work I need to manually put it into airplane mode.
First world problem. But heck it is annoying.
Sometimes the communications between the watch app and the phone app can stop working. This can result in several issues, such as the inability to send maps, screens, intervals or routes from the phone app to the watch app, or the inability for the watch app to send workouts back to the phone. Other communications can still work (for example the workout is successfully sent back to the Health and Activity apps) but communications stop working between the WorkOutDoors watch and iPhone apps.
At its WWDC event in June, the company announced a slew of new features across its platforms, with offline maps being a notable addition. Before, Apple Maps cached some data, but this is the first time the app has supported truly offline maps.
As you resize your map, your estimated download size updates accordingly. When done, hit Download. Use the Downloads menu in the offline maps settings to restrict offline downloads to Wi-Fi only and minimize cellular data usage.
Turning on Automatic Updates on the offline maps screen prompts the app to fetch updates to your offline maps, if any. Enable Optimize Storage to have Maps automatically delete offline maps not used in a while when low on storage space.
With the upcoming iOS 17 update, Apple Maps will finally support offline maps, a feature that already exists on Google Maps, and is arguably the main reason why iPhone users switched over in the first place. As the name suggests, offline maps allow users to download areas of data so that they can be accessed when there's no internet or the signal is weak.
The download size of offline maps depends on the region you select. The bigger the area, the larger the download size, and vice versa. (Obviously.) For reference, the suggested map of my area takes up 264MB.
To delete an offline map, swipe the list from right to left in this list. You can not delete the fixed maps OpenStreetMap and OpenStreetMap - Big. However, if you swipe over this entry from right to left, you can clear the map cache, i.e. all previously loaded map data will be deleted.
If you are working with this map type for the first time, myTracks will load the required map data directly from the server. Thus, first of all an internet connection is needed. However, the use of offline maps is more practical, because then the data of a complete country is always available. This has the advantage that you can always work without an Internet connection.
The offline maps of the OSM vector map are always country related i. e., each country has a complete map that contains all zoom levels. The list of all available offline maps can be found in the settings of the OSM vector map. Tap the entry Offline maps. The list is sorted alphabetically by country name. In the case of the US, a list of all federal states will appear again, as they are available as offline maps individually. In addition there are some map packages available, e.g. for Europe.
If the offline map has been loaded, then it is available directly. You do not need to activate it explicitely. If you have loaded several offline maps, all these maps will be used by myTracks at the same time.
Installed offline maps can be identified by the fact that no download symbol is displayed next to the flag. You can also delete installed maps. In the list of all offline maps, swipe from right to left over the entry. Then a button appears with the text Delete. You can download the map for free at a later time.
iOS 17 is full of new features, one of which Apple Maps users have been requesting for a very long time: the ability to download and manage offline maps. That way, iPhone owners can navigate cities without an active internet connection.
From the Offline Maps menu, tap Update All to ensure all your offline maps are fully up to date. Obviously, this requires an internet connection. Make sure you also toggle on Automatic Updates for this to happen automatically.
Thanks to iOS 17, you can now download Apple Maps, so you can view maps even when you aren't connected to the internet. If you know how to download offline Google Maps, you'll know exactly how useful this feature can be, allowing you to navigate, find your way and carry on traveling even if you're in an area that isn't covered by Wi-Fi or cellular networks.
Downloading offline Apple Maps is super easy, too, and can be done with just a few taps. Bear in mind that the downloaded maps can get quite large, and for good reason: you'll have all the functionality of using Maps online, offline, meaning you can zoom right into maps to see all roads and places. A map area covering most of England (which is about as big as the offline map area capture allows) works out at about 6GB. Needless to say, these maps will eat up your storage space very quickly, so use them wisely and delete any you no longer use. We'll show you how to find and manage your downloaded maps, too.
Given the size of downloaded maps, you'll want to exercise some prudence in which maps you keep downloaded. As such, it'll pay to learn how to manage your offline Apple Maps. Thankfully, this is a super simple thing to do.
Make sure you've downloaded the maps of the areas you'd like to search offline. Check that you've tagged the option to use the app in offline mode. The street, city or region should be spelled correctly with no mistakes. Abbreviations might affect the app's results.
..The maps are perfect for outdoor workouts, including paths, trails, tracks & ski pistes. They can be smoothly panned with your finger and zoomed by using the digital crown. They can also be stored offline on your watch for use when there is no data signal. Choose from standard maps or topographic maps with contours and hill shading.
