Almost three decades on, Aliens still looks like some kind of miracle. How did James Cameron, the veteran of precisely two films (one of which was unwatchable) manage to match, some would say improve upon, one of the most inventive sci-fi movies ever made? Where did that script spring from, so streamlined and propulsive yet at the same time so sharp and quotable? And how, on a budget that would barely have covered the on-set sandwich trolley for Avatar, did he manage to create such an all-encompassing world, such dangerously droolsome hardware, such repulsively believable xenomorphic monsters?

And so we reach the top of our list (by a galactic margin), a film that scrapes the farthest edge of cinematic achievement. By 1963 and his fearsomely brilliant Dr. Strangelove, Stanley Kubrick was already the most scientific mind to ever step behind a camera. It made sense, then, that he would dive into an unprecedented four-year production process to bring sci-fi up to his exacting standards.

If you're a lover of science fiction in film, there's a good chance some movies you love are on this list. Perhaps if you're not as familiar with the genre, this could be a guide, giving you some ideas of where to start a journey into space and time. From all-time classics to modern blockbusters, here's a look at the 35 sci-fi movies that we think are the best of all time.

While director Christopher Nolan did a lot of good to bring credibility to the comic book genre with his Dark Knight trilogy, it was a film he made in between those movies that were truly revolutionary. In many ways, the set-up was that of a simple heist. However, the trick was that the information our team needed to steal was inside somebody's head. The story creates technology that allows them to enter the dreams of unsuspecting victims. Inception has many of the hallmarks of the best science fiction. It creates a fictional world with specific rules that the story must abide by, making the situation feel more real than it could ever be. This, combined with some stunning visual set pieces, captured practically rather than digitally, makes Inception a worthy recent entry to this list. And of course, there's also the Inception ending which has remained one of the most talked about movie conclusions ever.

Most of the movies on this list are big and popular films that you're likely familiar with, even if you haven't seen them. Snowpiercer was something of an unknown quantity upon its release. Over time, however, it has acquired a significant fanbase. Korean director Bong Joon-ho's English-language debut sees Chris Evans as a passenger on a train in a future world that has been taken over by ice. Only those on a constantly moving train survive and quality of life is dictated by your position on the train. Those in the back start a revolt that takes them forward on the massive train. Whether you're looking for great action sequences or an examination of society you'll get both with Snowpiercer.

No list of science fiction films could possibly be complete without the movie that created one of the biggest action heroes of all-time. The Terminator introduced Arnold Schwarzenegger as an unstoppable killing machine and for a guy that looked like he did, audiences bought it. Even if Arnold himself was unsure about his most iconic line. While the movie doesn't have the flashy special effects of future sequels, that's part of why this movie still stands up. It's a desperate fight against an unstoppable force; it's not supposed to be pretty. While most of the movies that followed never held up, the reason they even tried is because the original was so good.

One of the best science fiction films ever made deals with elements of artificial intelligence, love between artificial beings, and the destruction of human habitat. Also, it's an animated Pixar movie. Pixar has a near perfect record when it comes to creating good movies, however, Wall-E may be in a class by itself. It's a film so good that the movie doesn't even require dialogue for half its runtime. It is by far the best animated science fiction movie ever made and Wall-E will be one of our favorite sci-fi characters forever. Wall-E and Eve have one of the great cinematic romances of all time.

Who could have possibly dreamed that all these years later a movie about a planet run by apes would still be so popular? And yet, here we are. While the original may be best known for its famous twist ending as opposed to anything else, its influence on popular culture simply can't be overlooked. It received sequels, adaptations, spoofs, a new trilogy of movies that have been as good as anything the series has ever produced, and the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. None of that happens without Charlton Heston and the "damn dirty apes" which earns it a spot on this list.

It's a weird time for movies, but it was also a great year for films of all kinds: American ones, international ones, comedies, horror, sci-fi, dramas...heck, even a Godzilla movie (Godzilla Minus One) was excellent. I saw hundreds of movies this year, and to make a 10-best list this year was incredibly hard but always enjoyable. These are the 10 best movies of 2023.
10. The Killer

The following list includes films from genres like sci-fi, thrillers, and comedies, and boasts new titles just released and classics from the '80s and '90s. It's the perfect way to celebrate New Year's Day, and it's pretty cheap, too.

Updated on July 18th, 2020 by Derek Draven: As mentioned in our updated intro, we've added 5 more fantastic sci-fi flicks to our list for a total of 15 choices that any Alita fan should enjoy. All the entries on this list showcase the influence they've had on later properties, including Alita: Battle Angel. For that reason, they deserve a top spot on anyone's must-watch list.

Obviously, the Blade Runner franchise is bound to be on this list. The first film is one of the most notable granddaddies of the cyberpunk genre and many dystopian sci-fi films owe a lot to Blade Runner. The franchise paints a bleak future where androids are being hunted down for acting like human beings.

You're probably tired of seeing Akira over and over again in many sci-fi or anime movie lists. It can't be helped, Akira is just a cyberpunk masterpiece both from a visual and narrative standpoint. The fluid hand-drawn animations and the attention to detail is something unmatched by many anime today and to a certain extent, the anime film for Alita is quite similar.

Can't get enough of cyberpunk anime movies? Then Neo Tokyo is something you'll want to watch once you've exhaustively seen Ghost in the Shell, Alita (the anime movie), and Akira. Neo Tokyo is a sci-fi anthology film featuring different cyberpunk and dystopian future stories.

Not many Hollywood or Western movies capture the same portrayal of futuristic dystopia as Alita did, which is why Elysium by Neill Blomkamp is a breath of fresh air. He's also the director of political sci-fi masterpieces such as District 9, and Elysium follows the same format of a battered and near-disabled hero who manages to upset the balance between the rich and the poor.

For all its sci-fi backdrop, Alita never really delved that deeply into its lore aspect; its action set pieces took the forefront more dominantly and if you find that you like more of that better or if you've had your fill of existential and nihilistic headaches from films like Ex Machina or Blade Runner, then Tron could offer an action-packed breather for you.

Sid Natividad likes movies so much as to choose the risk of urinary tract infection than miss a few minutes of post-credit Easter eggs, that shows the extent of his dedication. He is well-versed in multiple fandoms that gravitate toward the edgy and nihilistic spectrum of the internet culture. Outside of being a writer for Screen Rant, he also works as a journalist and has risked his life for mere warzone photos.

However, it wasn't until the '80s and '90s that we began seeing A-list actors consistently signing on to science fiction films, with the peak of this beginning in the 1990s. Some of these roles are forever iconic, while others you may have forgotten. Here are ten A-list actors who appeared in 1990s' sci-fi movies.

Known for his dramatic and serious roles, Tommy Lee Jones was able to flex his comedic acting muscles in the 1999 hit science fiction action film Men in Black. Starring alongside up and comer Will Smith, Jones is featured as Agent K. A film that combines comedy with spectacular action set pieces, Men in Black is one of the best and most fun sci-fi action movies of all time.

Having made his name in Hollywood by starring in such sci-fi movies as Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Fly, Jeff Goldblum is perhaps best known mostly for his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm in the decade-defining science fiction film Jurassic Park. Steven Spielberg, the director who created the summer blockbuster, would also be responsible for reinventing it with Jurassic Park. Praised for its groundbreaking special effects, this dinosaur epic is one of the most recognizable and popular movies of all time.

Each convertible seats 4-6 guests who eat off formica countertops and watch sci-fi clips. Given that you are on set in a soundstage, the B-movies that play on the screen at the front of the theater are actually movies within movies.

In fact, the Oscars have traditionally ignored sci-fi as capable of producing serious awards contenders because legacy Academy members often are unable to see past the genre as anything more than commercial or blockbuster fare. And even when sci-fi does get a chance to walk down the red carpet, it's usually in recognition for technical achievements in special effects or sound design. Some recent movies, however, such as Gravity or Arrival, manage to score Best Picture nominations, reminding the Academy that sci-fi can do more than entertain audiences with a trip to the Final Frontier or to that galaxy far, far away.
