Hi all,

Does IAPP generate a certificate once you have passed the exam? I passed the CIPP/US exam last fall but I don’t see anything in my certification tab in my IAPP account. Thanks

Talha - I took the test in October.  The updates are vague because they can ask you anything.  I recommend making a chart of each of the laws.  For me, I could not memorize the law, but I could recall certain patterns after I made the comparison table, which helped in recalling the law.

Hi everyone!

I’m studying for the CIPP/US, and I see the updates to the exam as of 10/3/22, but the updates seem relatively vague re: upcoming new state laws (CO, NV, etc..) any advice on this? Does the official IAPP training cover these updates?

Hi all,

How did November go for all you exam-takers? Seemed like a lot of people were hoping to take the exam last month. Anyone on track to take it this month? I have a few updates I'd like to share with you about work we're doing in our CIPP/US and CIPM groups, as well as a discount code for a new CIPP/E course

I'm still looking for resources to share in our CIPP/US group to help candidates with their studies. Let me know if you used anything you felt was invaluable.
In the meantime, I'm thinking of switching on the Mentorship feature that comes with facebook groups. There's actually not much info on how exactly this works but I'm guessing it is basically as described - a place for students to connect with mentors to help them through their exam journey. I'll probably switch that on in the coming days and see how it works. All are welcome to take part. https://www.facebook.com/groups/cippusstudygroup

For those taking CIPM, I've posted a document mapping the BoK to the IAPP textbook in the group. I'm also asking group members to add to this document, any links, websites, videos etc they found useful in explaining various topics on the BoK. Feel free to add yours! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PuCL30zpl0rM8hWoEjgsWCNzS032v474YRMOPHp7seM/edit?usp=sharing

In other news, we've launched a partnership with a new CIPP/E course creator. Madeleine Weber is a lawyer (and CIPP/E) who works with data protection and the GDPR and she has kindly agreed to make her course available to our group members at a 25% discount. The course contains a full set of downloadable revision notes and a mock exam and these are also available to purchase separately at a 10% discount. More details and the discount codes below if anyone is looking to start on their CIPP/E journey soon.

What can you expect from the course?
  • Short (avg. 3-5 mins) video lectures on each area of the Body of Knowledge. Easy to dip in and out on your mobile device when you have spare time
  • Flexible study plan that tells you how long it will take to complete the course depending on how many hours per week you can dedicate
  • Slides can all be downloaded for you to make your own notes
  • Full set of downloadable revision notes, including summaries of the EDPB guidelines
  • 90 qs downloadable mock exam and answer key
What we loved:
  • Accuracy of information is excellent
  • Combination of video, audio and written notes is flexible for all learning styles
  • User-friendly interface
  • Fully up to date with the latest Bok topics.
  • Money-back guarantee
  • If you don’t want to take the full course, you can purchase the revision notes incl summaries of EDPB guidelines or the mock exam as separate stand-alone products
✨ This is the course page where you can learn more, see free previews of the contents and enrol https://www.inhousew.com/cippe-preparation/
✨ Use FBGROUP25 for 25% off the course
✨ Use FBGROUP10 for 10% off the revision notes or mock exam

Things to know:
  • Recommend you also buy a copy of the IAPP book European Data Protection to accompany this course
  • 25% discount applies to the course if purchased in full. If you wish to purchase in 2 payments, the discount applies only to the first payment.
  • If you wish to purchase the revision notes or the mock exam separately from the course, the discount is 10%
Wishing you all a happy holiday season!

Thanks, everyone for the tips.

I plan on resitting the exam after I failed last year...I just haven't summed up the courage or effort to resit.

I have the Chappel book and the questions and the main book...I also bought the Privacy BootCamp and I'm targeting to resit before the end of the year.

Kind regards,

Julie and All,

I have attached the sample questions to this email.  I got it from this group a while back, but I can't recall the author.  Full credit goes to the author for the wonderful guide.  I studied these questions extensively and over and over again.   I recommend reviewing the questions in the following order:

1. Mike Chappelle's Question Bank questions that are provided upon purchase of the CIPP/US Study Guide.  I've recommended this a few times so far.  I have no affiliation with the author; I think the 380 practice questions are a good foundation.
2.  IAPP's sample questions.  They are approximately $35 for 25 questions, but definitely helpful.
3.  The attached questions.  I thought the attached questions were the hardest... but I also started with them first.
4.  Mike Chappelle's Questions again, until the day before the test.

Good luck!

Good morning, everyone.  I just passed on the first try.  I will try to provide my study recommendations and test day preparations if taking online rather than in-perhson.

Read and Outline the Book.  There are great outlines here, and I'm happy to add mine, but it is best if you do it yourself.  My outline is mostly organized, but I started to explore other ways of presenting info, so it may be confusing at first.
  • Make a Table for Each Law.  Within the outline or in a separate section, make a table like I did in my outline.  This was really helpful in organizing the different laws.
Purchase this bookBuying this book gives you access to a databank of 380 questions.  These questions are easier than the test, but provide a very good foundation.  And yes, the test questions are similar to the databank questions. Take notes on laws/areas that you are not confident in.  I tried reading the book, and while there was information in here that is not covered by the book, I don't think it's worth learning for the test.

Take Sample Test in the Study Group.  I worked through these questions first, and then found the questions in the database too easy.  So these are a little harder, and it is good to take a harder test to see where your knowledge is lacking.

Take IAPP's Sample Test.  Yes, it's only 25 questions, but by the time you get through these questions (and the databank and study group questions), I think you'll have a good sense of the test, and what areas you need to work on.

Don't Fear State Law.  My biggest fear was how am I going to learn all the state law.  I would say, focus on the laws expressly listed in the Body of Knowledge or Any IAPP Exam updates.  By doing the practice questions and focusing on the "big laws", you should be fine.

Exam Day Online.
  • Make sure you ensure that your laptop is acceptable for the test.  My laptop was not ok b/c I have a desktop Dropbox.  So I had to borrow my husband's.
  • Make sure your laptop is plugged in during the test.  I had major technical issues b/c for some reason, the laptop's battery ran low unusally fast (within 50 minutes even though it was on full before exam).  Even if you think your laptop won't die, trust me, just plug it in.
Good luck!

Hello all,

Best of luck to all those with upcoming exams! I have included some useful links below

Our study groups are hosted on Facebook and can be really useful for finding out how others have approached their studies, what resources they used and also for reviews of third party courses and trial exams like Privacy Bootcamp etc. The #examexperience topic is the best place to start when you join. It's so useful to hear how other have prepared. Click on the  #trialexam, #books or #onlinecourses topics to find other posts specific to your needs. The groups are also full of experienced and already qualified professionals who kindly stick around to answers questions so feel free to post about any topics you are stuck on. We moderate these groups closely so you'll find them very welcoming and friendly

Study groups for CIPP/E, CIPP/US, CIPM and CIPT https://privacystudygroup.com/privacy-study-groups/

We don't have groups for CIPP/C or A but there have been a handful of posts about CIPP/C in the CIPP/E group but generally we don't hear much from candidates taking these exams. You are welcome to put out a call for study buddies in any of the groups though!

The IAPP exams are all being updated on October 3rd this year and new Body of Knowledge documents will take effect. Here's a good overview of the changes

For anyone doing CIPP/E, we wrote an Ultimate guide to passing last year. It does need a little updating but much of it is still very relevant https://privacystudygroup.com/ultimate-cippe-study-guide-pass-cippe-in-2021/

Sometimes we can secure discounts for our group members on various courses, trial exams and books. Right now, we only have discounts available in our CIPP/E group (including for one excellent trial exam) but I can see most people here are interested in CIPP/US. We are always evaluating products that can help people pass the exams but are very selective about who we partner with. If we find any great CIPP/US resources  that we can get discounted for our group members, I will post about them here.

Hope these links help!

Yes, I am interested in updates and resources. I passed the CIPP/US at the end of last year, and have been studying for the CIPM. Any advice would be appreciated. My study time isn't as consistent as it was when I was studying for the CIPP (I have a 4 year old & 1 year old), but I'm determined to pass! :)

Thank you,

I signed up to take the CIPP/US at the start of 1L and the test was really daunting to me. I kept hearing about people not passing it.

I finally took it in August (after 2L) after doing Privacybootcamp.com - it is expensive but has a pass guarantee if you complete their online self-paced course.

I had a really hard time making myself study so I bought this boot camp and I completed it in the weeks leading up to my test. I passed the test.

I also barely passed the test. It’s really hard in one way and easy in another. It does not have trick questions or questions meant to confuse you like most law school tests. But it tests minutiae.  There are tons of laws and it tests a lot of details.

If you are committed to being a privacy attorney, it is important to know the content on this test. If you are not planning to be a privacy professional I can’t think of any reason to put yourself through this unless memorizing is easy for you.

Hi Julianne,

I believe you have to pay the certification maintenance fee before they will issue the certificate. This has to be paid every two years. Alternatively if you purchase IAPP membership every year, the fee for certification maintenance is included in that.
I’d suggest emailing certif...@iapp.org, they are usually very responsive.

All the best,

Maria
