Hi,

I took and passed the CIPP/US in December after joining this group sometime in September.  I hadn't sat for it before and did fairly well, with an average score of 86% across all 5 domains. My weakest area on the exam was workplace privacy.  I don't have much to add to what others have said. It's an odd exam in that it tests the material both very broadly and practically microscopically. There were many questions where the answer would be discernible if you'd paid even the slightest amount of attention to the course materials and then there were other questions that required you to recall minutiae that likely would have eluded you unless you reviewed the information 2 hours prior to the exam.

When studying for the exam, I found that I retained very little after simply reading the IAPP text for the course. I initially referred to several of the outlines available on this site, which were incredibly helpful, especially the outline by Charlie Vuong as updated by AS and the updated outline dated 09/2020. Ultimately, though, I wanted something more customized that filled in more of the details so that I could rely solely on the single document when I sat down to seriously study prior to taking the exam.

The result was the attached outline that I built using the skeleton provided by the Body of Knowledge (shown in navy blue text in the document). At 91 pages, it's definitely quite comprehensive.  Although the outline did what I needed it to, since I passed the exam, in retrospect, I wish I'd had the time before my exam date to whittle the document down. I had so much information in my head in the last couple of days before the exam that I was starting to get the requirements of the various federal and state laws confused. Unnerving, to say the least.

While building the outline, I reviewed and referred to the IAPP online course materials, the 3rd edition of the book, the Chapple course on LinkedIn, and many IAPP Summit courses and articles.  I'm a practicing attorney with over 20 years of experience who has only recently started practicing in the area of privacy law.  This was my first online exam.  The last bar exam I took was in 2001, and it was paper-based.

I want to thank everyone who created and participates in this fantastic online group project. It helped tremendously in my preparation, and I hope that the attached might help others get through this exam. Next up for me is probably the CIPP/E and then the CIPM. I find the area both fascinating and challenging from a professional standpoint, so I hope to learn much more.

Congrats on passing! And thank you for sharing your experience.

This document is amazing, may I add it to the Google Drive?
