For those using an Elan Cybra with plover on Windows 7, I understand that you need a serial to usb adapter for it to work with plover as the usb port on the machine does not work with plover.

Is stenograph driver needed to be installed in windows for the machine to work with plover over serial to usb or is it just plug and play? I currently own an Elan Cybra, but I don't have a serial to usb adapter/cable to test.

I don't remember if I installed the drivers, but I doubt it.  The whole idea is that you can't use the USB drivers in any event, so you switch your Cybra's TX Bolt mode on and use the adapters.  Over the years I have bought and tried many, many of these adapters.  I have the one from Stenograph working atm, but I did have a problem with the writer periodically dumping garbage and stopping.  Not sure if that was the driver, the writer, or Plover.

Thanks for the quick reply. In that case, I will be getting this cable. According to reviews, people seem to have better luck working with FTDI chipsets.

Hi BT.

You shouldn't need any stenograph drivers. When you first plug your Serial-to-USB cable into your PC, the drivers for that will install automatically. These are the only drivers you need.

In case it helps, I can vouch for this adapter:

Looks like the one you've picked out is a good choice though. The socket is the correct orientation to fit the socket on the steno machine and the post screws are correct (screwing into the steno machine rather than having posts on the adapter like mine). Also it's got a 10 foot cable. Let us know whether it works because this cable would probably be my first choice given the choice again.

I am happy to report that the 10 foot cable that I bought from Amazon.com works perfectly with my Elan Cybra.

When I plugged in the cable, windows 7 automatically looked online for a driver, and it found one.

After that, it was simply plugging the other end into the Elan Cybra and switch it into serial mode (press and hold the second and third buttons from the left simultaneously)

Settings in Plover:  TX Bolt, COM5.

No other settings were touched.

Hi there, just wondering if this cable has been used with a Cybra, with success? I have tried a number of them, and I cannot get my Cybra to work -- and the devil of it all is that once you select the "Stentura" setting in Plover, you cannot stop it from trying to initialize -- in that case, you have to dive out all Plover files (.cfg, especially) and then reload -- that can be quite a pain. Still, I this great writer, and cannot use it. I use other writers with this software, but would like the Cybra as a back up, if needed. Suggestions?

Hi BT.

Does it also work on Stentura mode? You shouldn't have to switch it into TX Bolt unless you want to. I have the same machine and initially mine only worked on TX Bolt but I tweaked some of the Stentura settings in Plover (I think it was parity) and then it worked.

Mine worked with the default settings in plover. In either stentura or tx bolt mode. It has a lot to do with the manufacturer of the chipset in your cable, and the available drivers for that chip set.
I'm using Linux with built in drivers.

I think the prolific and ftdi chipsets are well supported (90% sure)

Upon further testing, yes, it does work on Stentura mode.
