I just got a StenoRam II from a moving sale. It may not actually work
and/or it may be useless to me, but I'm willing to lose the $25 to
check it out.

The machine is missing its paper tray, rolls of paper, and the
charger. So it very well may be useless. But even if I can just get it
printing characters to paper somehow, I'd consider it a "success."
When I press the keys (which have no letters printed on them -- is
that normal?), it looks like the mechanical letters strike the printer
ribbon. Does that mean I can use it like a mechanical typewriter,
without needing the charger or the computer cable?

I haven't been able to find a manual for it online. Does anyone here
know where I could find one?

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! (Or even being told "sorry
but you're just out $25", if that's how it is.)

Thanks,
Arthaey

Congratulations, Arthaey, on having your first writer. Yes, it is
normal for the keys to have no letters on them. They normally do not.

I am not sure about the answers to your other questions, but I can
point you to this website which is run by a fellow named Glen Warner
who has obsessively collected every fact about steno, steno machines,
theories, etc., known to humankind:

http://www.cheapandsleazy.net/

I am not sure why it's called "cheapandsleazy" but it's a goldmine of
information about all things steno, and I think he has some
information about every writer in use in the last 30 years. If you
don't find anything about the StenoRam by searching, just email him
and he'll probably have a lot of useful information for you. He
constantly amazes me. He really deserves some kind of award for that
website.

I hope your StenoRam works out for you. I bet it will.

Also, Arthaey, I found the stenowatchdog review on your writer here:

According to that site, Xscribe (the makes of StenoRam) got bought and
so parts can be harder to come by now. Oh well. On the other hand,
looking at the prices he's mentioning for even used machines, I think
$25 is an A-okay amount to "waste" on a maybe-working-maybe-not steno
machine. :P
