----- Lesson 1 -----
-- GROUP A --
1. Silent Letters Omitted. In the English language, many words
contain letters that are not pronounced. In machine shorthand, we
omit all silent letters, except for a few cases where they are needed
to distinguish sound-alikes. Such cases in this manual will be
flagged "SPEL". Otherwise, we omit all silent letters and write only
those sounds that we hear in a word. For example, for the word _say_,
we write s-a, omitting the _y_, which is not pronounced. For the word
_knee_, we write n-e, as the k and the final e are not pronounced.
For the word _cat_, we write k-a-t, as the c is pronounced k. SPEL:
there is, however, a special form for sound _n_ when it is _spelled_
following a k.

2. S, Z, A. The first shorthand stroke you will learn is the letter
s. Before a vowel, it is stroked with the little finger of the left
hand, on either the upper or lower portion of the key. For the time
being, it is recommended to strike the initial s- on the lower portion
of the key. It appears in the mini-chart as s...__'...: . After a
vowel, it is stroked with the little finger of the right hand on the
lower key that naturally falls under the right little finger. This
appears on the mini-chart as ....__'...s . The right little finger
has four keys it may reach, for the final -s, it is the lower key that
naturally should fall under the right little finger, closest to the
hand. The final -z is stroked like the final -s, but with the right
little finger extended to the lower key further from the hand. This
appears as ....__'...z

The second shorthand stroke you will learn is the letter a, which is
stroked with the left thumb on the vowel key closest to the left
hand. There are two forms of the letter a, depending on which _sound_
is heard. if a "short" sound is heard, such as in "cat", it is
stroked as described, and appears in the mini-chart as ....a_'...: For
the "long" sound, such as in "mail", it is also stroked the same way,
but both of the vowel keys of the other thumb are added at the same
time, by depressing the vertical "crack" between the two keys. This
appears in the mini-chart as ....ai'...: .

3. F, V. The shorthand stroke for an initial f- is made with the ring
and middle fingers on the left hand each on its upper
key. .~f.__'...: The final -f is stroked with the right index finger
on the upper key. ....__'f..: The shorthand stroke for v- is the
first and forth fingers of the left hand on the lower portion of the
keyboard. ~..v__'...: The final -v is accomplished with the first
two fingers of the right hand, the index finger on the upper key and
the middle finger on the lower key. ....__'~v..: .

4. E. The shorthand stroke for e is the stroked with the right hand
thumb on the vowel key furthest from the hand. The short sound, like
in the word "pet" is stroked as described ...._e'...: . However, the
long sound, like in the word "fleet", is stroked the same way, but
adding both vowel keys of the opposite hand. This appears
as ....@e'...: .

5. N, M. The stroke for an initial n- is all the fingers of the
right hand except the little finger each on its upper
key. .~~n__'...: . A final -n is stroked with the right middle
finger depressing the horizontal "crack" between both keys under the
right middle finger, so that both keys under the finger are
pressed. ....__'.n.: The initial m- is stroked on the upper register
of keys, like n-, but only the middle and index finger is
used ..~m__'...: The final -m is pressed with the right hand, the
ring and middle fingers both on the upper keys: ....__'.~m:

6. T. D. The shorthand stroke for the initial t- is the upper key for
the left ring finger. For the final -t, it is the upper key for the
right little finger closest to the hand. Initial d- is executed with
both keys of the left ring finger pressing the horizontal "crack"
between the keys. Final -d is the upper key of the right little
finger extended away from the hand.

the vowel key furthest from the hand. ....oe'...: For the time being
only the "long" sound for o is presented, such as for "toe", or
"coat". R is pressed with the index finger on the lower portion of
the key: the initial r- with the left hand; the final -r with the
right hand. ...r__'...: ....__'r..: . The initial l- is both keys
under the index finger of the left hand done by pressing the
horizontal "crack" between the keys; the final -l is the right ring
finger on the upper key. ...l__'...: ....__'..l:

10. Punctuation and Capitalization. The natural key names appear in
the minichart for a punctuation symbol, which show some letters not
yet introduced. Nonetheless, it is the fingering pattern or the shape
that should be remembered, with the mini-chart suggesting the correct
fingering positions.

11. Reading Practice. With the aid of the few words given, you can
already read the following sentences. Spell each word aloud as you
read it, thus: "f-r-a-t, freight; r-a-t, rate." If you cannot read
the word after you have spelled it, refer to the key that is given
below.

SPEL -- spelling distinction rule

.d..@_'r..: door -- SPEL - any vowel sound _spelled_ with "oo" is
stroked with both vowel keys only of the left hand. It appears on the
minichart as ....@_'...: for /AO/ . Spelling distinction rules can
greatly reduce the number of special forms required to be learned in
order to distinguish sound-alikes.

12. Conflict avoidance. A _conflict_ is where one stroke represents
two or more different words or word parts. Older theories that were
always intended to be hand-transcribed could tolerate these conflicts,
because the transcriber could discern the correct representation from
the context of the usage. The development of computer-aided
translation could remove the need for this tedious hand-transcription
step, but only if the theory in use was itself _conflict free_. This
is because the interpretation of English context is (currently) beyond
the capabilities of any computer translator. Therefore, modern
machine shorthand theories avoid these conflicts altogether.
_Mandatories_ are required forms for words in the theory that must be
stroked exactly as shown to avoid creating conflicts. In this manual,
they are flagged "MAND".

----- Lesson 3 -----
-- GROUP A --

18. -SS . SPEL Single-syllable words _spelled_ ending in -ss are
represented with the -S and -Z keys together /-SZ/. It is indicated
on the mini-chart as ....__'...$ . The right little finger partially
extends to press both lower keys simultaneously, by depressing the
vertical "crack" between the two keys. This helps to distinguish
sound-alikes such as bus/buss, less (word)/les- (word part), miss
(word)/mis- (word part), and so forth.

18A. Ă, Ä, -ing. In longhand, a represents the sound of ă (as in
has) and ä (as in mark). Both of these sounds are represented by the
short form for the a, ....a_'...: . At the end of words, -ing is
represented by a separate stroke ....__'..g: .

19. Ĕ, Obscure vowel, Ĭ. The short form for the e represents the
sound of ĕ (as in tell), and the osbcure vowel preceding r (as in
her). The short form for i represents the sound ĭ (as in trim). It
is made by depressing the vertical "crack" between the two keys under
the right thumb, so that both keys are pressed together. It is
indicated on the minichart ...._i'...: .

19A. -e ending sound. At the end of a word, the sound of e, usually
spelled "-y", is represented with the vowel combination ....ae'...: .
Both the a and the e are pressed simultaneously with both thumbs. The
left thumb presses the key closest to the hand and the right thumb
presses the key farthest from the hand. This helps to distinguish
word boundaries.

20. TH. The initial sound of th- is made by combining the strokes for
t- and -h. .t.h__'...: . The final sound of -th is made by combining
the strokes for -g and -t. ....__'..gt . The mini-chart remains as
shown for the final -th form because of the large number of special
meanings employed for -gt.

.~f.__'...: if
.~~y__'...: I /KWR-/

the 'y-' form is made with the left ring, middle, and index finger
each on its lower key. Alone it is the mandatory brief for "I".

``` .-. .-. .-. ```` .'. ```` .-. .-. .-. .--.
.-. [~] [~] [Y] _.._ ``` _.._ .-. .-. .-. .--.
22. initial Z-. The initial Z- sound is represented by ~.~z__'...: .
Each key is pressed with a lower key, with all the fingers of the left
hand except the ring finger.
``` .-. .-. .-. ```` .'. ```` .-. .-. .-. .--.
[~] .-. [~] [Z] _.._ ``` _.._ .-. .-. .-. .--.

~.~z_i'.p.: zap
~.~zoe'.n.: zone

22A. XPOS this sections introduces some standard forms that will be
studied more thoroughly later. [translator's note: The original
manual presents these as special forms that are not necessary to
abbreviate in machine `shorthand].

..w._i'..l: will -- the /W-/ key is below the /P-/ key with the left
hand middle finger

``` .-. .-. .-. ```` .'. ```` .-. .-. [L] .--.
.-. .-. [W] .-. _.._ ``` [~I] .-. .-. .-. .--.
.~~nau'...t not -- the /AU/ vowel is the short form of 'o', made with
both thumbs simultaneously pressing the vowel keys closest to the
hand. This will be formally introduced in the next lesson.
``` [~] [~] [N] ```` .'. ```` .-. .-. .-. [T.]
.-. .-. .-. .-. [A.] ``` [.U] .-. .-. .-. .--.

...hou'r..: hour -- This uses the /OU/ diphthong for the sound heard
in the words "hour" and "cow". The left hand vowel is pressing the
key away from the hand; the right hand vowel is simultaneously
pressing the key close to the hand. The 'h-' is included to
distinguish this from the word "our".

``` .-. .-. [H] ```` .'. ```` .-. .-. .-. .--.
.-. .-. .-. .-. [.O] ``` [.U] [R] .-. .-. .--.
23. Reading Practice. If you have studied diligently the material
presented in Lessons 1, 2, and 3, you will be able to read the
following sentences without difficulty. As an aid to your reading,
you will find in the margin some of the outlines that might "stump"
you.
SPEL
distinguishes word boundaries, such as "or
deal" ....oe'r..: .d..@e'..l: with "ordeal" ....o_'r..: .d..@e'..l: .
..b.ai*...: buy -- recall that the asterisk is included to distinguish
----- Lesson 6 ----- RECALL
There is nothing new for you to learn in Lesson 6. In this lesson you
will find a simple explnation of the principles that govern the
placement of the strokes that you have learned thus far, an interesing
chart that will enable you to see how well you remember the things you
stuided in Chapter 1, and a series of short letters in shorthand.
There is also included a "phrasing" option for combining common briefs
to one stroke, which can help reduce the number of strokes required in
your dictation.
Principles of joining
As a matter of interest, you might like to know the principles under
which the words you have already learned are written. The joining of
the shorthand characters are so easy and natural that it hardly seems
necessary to give rules or explnations. However, notice the groups
into which the joinings naturally fall.
38. The natural key order. The original stenographer's machine
printed all keys on a paper-tape in the following natural key order
STKPWHRAO*EUFRPBLGTSDZ
Where a key was struck on the original mechanical machine, that letter
appeared always in that column on the narrow paper tape, one stroke
per line.
STKPWHRAO*EUFRPBLGTSDZ
__________E___PBLG____ ...._e'.~j: edge
___P_H_AO_E___PB______ ..~m@e'.n.: mean
_______A_EU___P_L_____ ....ai'.~m: aim
___P_H_A_EU___PB______ ..~mai'.n.: main
___P_H_A_EU___________ ..~mai'...: may
_TK____AOE__________D_ .d..@e'...d deed
The orthodox approach is to take the papertape line and remove all of
the spaces, thus giving the compressed papertape form. The order of
the keys remains. Some of the key names ( S, T, P, and R ) may appear
both on the left and on the right side of the vowels.
39. The mini-chart. The outlines for words given thus far were
presented with a "mini-chart". A more orthodox approach is to employ
the compressed papertape line format. The two forms can be
interchanged -- each completely and unambiguously specifies a stroke.
Here is a review showing how the two forms compare:
40. Some of the standard key names are duplicated on the left and
right of the vowel keys in the center. Where there is no vowel or
asterisk in the outline, a hyphen "-" is placed in the compressed
papertape form where the asterisk would appear to indicate which side
of the keyboard is intended.
41. Multi-syllable words are written by joining as much of the word as
will fit in each stroke, however a common root is usually stroked
unmodified.
42. There is an option to combine the briefs given into phrases. In
this manual, this will generally be restricted to words that include
the articles "a" and "the". Each such phrase contains an asterisk to
distinguish the stroke for a phrase from the stroke for a word part.
In this manual, these _optional_ elements will be flagged "PHRZ" .
43. For a conflict-free theory, different strokes must be arranged
for sound-alikes. Stroking "what you hear" will generally produce the
most common homonym. Stroking options will distinguish less common
homonyms when desired. Such options can include: incorporating an
asterisk, changing the natural vowel to a less common type, including
the stroke for "silent" letters, include "unusual" or "unpronouncable"
consonant combinations, and following the word with a special stroke
that will be introduced later. Where possible, whole families of
spelling distinction will be addressed with a single rule.
44. Recall Chart. This chart is divided into three parts: (1) words
that illustrate the principles, (2) mandatory brief forms, and (3) a
review of the phrases just introduced. As you read each word, spell
it to yourself aloud, thus: a-r-m, arm. You need not spell the brief
forms and phrases.
The chart contains 60 words and phrases. Can you read the entire
chart in 6 minutes or less?
Principles of joining
As a matter of interest, you might like to know the principles under
which the words you have already learned are written. The joining of
the shorthand characters are so easy and natural that it hardly seems
necessary to give rules or explanations. However, notice the groups
into which the joinings naturally fall.
If there is still interest in my "translations", here is the reading practice for Lesson 4 in traditional format.  I have a program that can translate either back and forth from/to the "minicharts".  Interesting, each outline ends up delimited with the '/', which I find easier to read than the traditional format, but that, probably, is merely a matter of taste.
There is a #shorthand channel in the Plover Discord where you can post particular exercises and people will be happy to help decipher their meaning.
Good luck,
Ted
