Is there anyway to make switching between Plover from a normal keyboard more efficient? I would like to simple hold a key and have Plover turn on until I release it, to write a word. Having to switch back and fourth between it and what ever else I'm doing in 3 keystrokes is extremely inefficient.

I've been learning Plover and right now I could actually use it to speed my self up, but the major draw back is that using it in conjunction with a normal keyboard isn't nearly as effective as it should be. I also haven't found any alternative to Plover when it comes to creating multi-key single-stroke keyboard bindings.

I'm using the Stenomod which connects to Plover via the TX Bolt protocol. So, even if I have output enabled via Plover, my regular keyboard which I also have attached, still works as normal.

But, I did find that in the commands dictionary there are three strokes that might do what you want:

PHROLG: toggle
PHRO*F: suspend
PHROPB: resume

The first toggles output on and off. The second turns output off. The third turns output on. So, try those combinations and let us know if that works for you.

I think that's what Simon means by having to do three strokes PHROLG stroke PHROLG to interpret a single Plover stroke from within normal typing. It would nice if including another key in the stroke (e.g. space) would interpret the rest of the chord as Plover and immediately return to normal use.

There is a long discussion of the pros and cons of using the space bar as a function key here:

Rethinking: Caps Lock+stroke might be better, making it less likely for a fast typist to produce a spurious stroke
